Batonebo is a spiritual song from Georgia that was traditionally sung for children suffering from illness. It was believed that such songs would calm down and relieve the infirm. Goergians associates diseases such as measles and whooping cough with batonebi spirits. They prayed and sang to the batonebi, begged forgiveness, and offered violets and roses. By singing to the batonebi, it was believed they would leave the child to heal. Batonebo is sung in complex polyphony, and comes from the region of Guria.
