In one of the previous lessons we’ve learned Russian names of the days of the week. Today we’ll learn the names of the seasons. The Russian names of the seasons are: зима́ [zeemá] – winter весна́ [veesná] – spring ле́то [lyéta] – summer о́сень [óseen’] – autumn Some more useful vocabulary: вре́мя го́да [vryémya góda] – season времена́ го́да [vreemeená góda] – seasons со́лнце [sóntse] – sun (noun, n.) дождь [dozhd’] – rain (noun, m.) снег [snyek] – snow (noun, m.) хо́лодно [hóladna] – cold (adverb) жа́рко [zhárka] – hot (adverb) тепло́ [teepló] – warm (adverb) Examples: Я люблю́ зи́му, а ему́ нра́вится ле́то. [ya lyublyú zéemu a yemú nrávitsa lyéta] I like winter, and he likes summer. Како́е вре́мя го́да тебе́ нра́вится бо́льше всего́? [kakóye vryémya góda teebyé nráveetsa ból’she vseevó] What season do you like the most? Мне не нра́вится зима́, я не люблю́ снег. [mnye nee nrávitsa zeemá ya nee lyublyú snyek] I don’t like winter, I don’t love the snow. Я люблю́, когда́ жа́рко, поэ́тому мне нра́вится ле́то. [ya lyublyú kagdá zhárka paétamu mnye nráveetsa lyéta] I like when it’s hot, that is why I like summer. Она не лю́бит о́сень, потому́ что ей не нра́вится дождь. [aná nee lyúbeet óseen’ patamú chta yey nee nráveetsa dozhd’] She doesn’t like autumn, because she doesn’t like the rain. How to say ‘in summer’, ‘in winter’ etc. In this case Russians put the names of the seasons in the Instrumental case which we’ll learn some later. By now just remember these words: ле́том [lyétam] – in summer зимо́й [zeemóy] – in winter о́сенью [óseenyu] – in autumn весно́й [veesnóy] – in spring Examples: Ле́том тепло́, а зимо́й хо́лодно. [lyétam teepló a zeemóy hóladna] In the summer it’s warm and in the winter it’s cold. О́сенью ча́сто идёт дождь. [óseenyu chásta eedyót dozhd’] In autumn it often rains. Весно́й приро́да ожива́ет. As in English, the verb ‘to be’ (быть) in Russian is a main construction block in the language. In this lesson we’ll take a closer look at its use in the Past tense. The conjugation of the verb быть: я, ты, он был (masculine) я, ты, она была́ (feminine) оно бы́ло (neuter and impersonal) они бы́ли (plural) Examples (примеры): Когда́ э́то бы́ло? When was it? Э́то бы́ло вчера́. It was yesterday. Э́то бы́ло здо́рово! It was great! Где ты был? Where were you? Кни́га бы́ла интере́сной. The book was interesting. Вчера́ мы бы́ли в теа́тре. Yesterday we were in the theater. How to say ‘I had’, ‘you had’ etc. Do you remember how to say ‘I have’ in Russian? The same pattern is used if you want to say ‘I had’. Have a look at the examples and you’ll get the idea: У меня́ была́ температу́ра вчера́. I had fever yesterday. У него́ бы́ли пробле́мы, но сейча́с всё хорошо́. He had problems, but now everything is ok. Температу́ра is feminine, so you we use the feminine form of the verb быть. Пробле́мы is a plural noun, so we use были. @stepbysteprussian #Lesson99
