कस्यात्यन्तं सुखमुपनतं दुःखमेकान्ततो वा
नीचैर्गच्छत्युपरिच दशा चक्रनेमिक्रमेण।
No one gets always sorrow or always happiness.
States (of happiness and sorrow) keep turning around just as the spokes of a wheel keep going up and down.
This shloka is written by the great poet Kalidasa.
Bottom line: Sorrow and happiness are a part and parcel of life.We should not lose hope in challenging times rather we should face them with courage and strength.Sooner or later we shall overcome them. Also, when we are successful or achieve something,we shouldn't become arrogant as nothing is permanent.Change is the only constant thing.Hence,we should focus only on performing our duties and be detached from the fruits of action.
This shloka is generic in nature and can be used in gs 4, essay questions according to the demand.
Long live India, long live Indians and long live 'Dev Bhasha'.
रात गंवाई सोय के, दिवस गंवाया खाय
हीरा जनम अमोल था, कौड़ी बदले जाय ॥
Night wasted in sleeping, day wasted in eating,Life is precious like diamond,it shouldn't be wasted as if it is a seashell.
This doha is of Saint Kabir Das.
Bottom line:We shouldn't waste this precious life in procrastination, fulfilment of our senses, chasing materialistic things. The value of life should be understood and we should act in such a manner that it gives a meaning to our lives. We should help other fellow beings,be compassionate to all and we should embrace spiritualism.
Specifically this doesn't fit under any of the topics in gs4,however you may use it according to the demand of the appropriate question. You can also use them in conclusion of an essay on an ethical topic.
Long live India, long live Indians and long live 'Dev Bhasha'.
मनसा चिन्तितं कार्यं वाचा नैव प्रकाशयेत् |
मन्त्रेण रक्षयेद् गूढं कार्ये चाsपि नियोजयेत् ||
Whatever the mind has contemplated, should not be expressed from the mouth. Thinking it over, it must be kept a secret and without announcing the thought, it must be implemented in action.
This shloka is taken from Chanakya Neeti, written by Chanakya.
Bottom Line:One should not disclose his/her objectives, decisions, goals, aim in life publicly.Doing so will divert one's energy and time, build up mental pressure on that person and it is less likely that he/she will achieve his/her goals.Even some evil persons will create hurdles for such a person in achievement of his/her goals, implementation of their plan. There should be single minded focus on implementation of the plan, decision or aim. One should just take appropriate actions for successful completion of his/her objectives. As it is said 'actions speak louder than words' .One cannot afford to be distracted from one's goal so one should take every step to eliminate the distraction. If this is done then nobody can stop the person from being successful.
Use these in gs 4 questions on action oriented outlook, dedication, perseverance, keeping secrets of office guarded which is mandated by law and essay on similar themes.

Should we include English quotations apart from shlokas and dohas so that you get a 'holistic value added content' on one platform?
मा गृधः कस्यस्विद्धनम् l
“Do not be greedy for anyone’s wealth.”
This sukti is from Ishavasya Upanishad ,Verse 1.
कस्यस्वित् - kasyasvit - any man's | धन - dhana - possession | मा गृधः - mā gṛdhaḥ - lust not after |
Bottom line:Interestingly, this sukti has been adopted as the motto of Lokpal. One should enjoy the materialistic possessions with a sense of detachment towards them. Too much involvement, interest in them will lead to straying from the noble, spiritual path.Happiness is a state of being, its not a state of having.Life becomes less complicated and more enjoyable when we understand that things have their 'use value' and after their 'use' attachment should not be present. One should use reason to differentiate between 'need' and 'desire'. Focussing on 'need' by all human beings will lead to eradication of corruption, hoarding, tax evasion and even deter the destruction of nature.
Use this in gs2 questions of good governance, role of civil services in democracy,gs4 questions of ethical governance, qualities of a civil servant, probity in governance, corruption, utilisation of public funds and similar themes in essay paper.

Dear subscribers,
Hope your CSE preparation is in full swing. Nearly two months are left for the Preliminary examination,so it must be a tough 'balancing act' between Preliminary examination, General Studies and the 'never-ending optional paper'.But it is the ability to find the 'right' balance which differentiates you from others. Over confidence and under confidence both are fatal in this examination.Believe in yourself, have faith in the invisible force which gave you the opportunity to perform. However there should be a sense of detachment from the fruits of your efforts. You are entitled to perform your action but you don't have a 'right' on your fruits of action.
Hold your nerves and utilise this Sunday to revise the shlokas, dohas. It will help you in the examination by fetching some extra brownie points and also help you in motivation, calming your nerves in 'pressure cooker' situations. You will be killing two birds with one stone.😊
That's all from our side.Stay protected!

जिन खोजा तिन पाइया, गहरे पानी पैठ,
मैं बपुरा बूडन डरा, रहा किनारे बैठ।
A diver finds something or the other if (he/she) dives into deep water.I feared drowning,so ( I ) was sitting on the bank.
This doha is of Bhakti saint Kabir Das.
Bottom line:Those who make continuous efforts, take risk in life, choose the untrodden path will sooner or later find success. But those who fear failure and don't take risk in life, don't have perseverance, patience will achieve nothing in life. One should have the courage to take the path different from the mainstream. Only such a person can innovate, achieve which has been achieved only by a few.Robert Frost in his 'Road not Taken' has beautifully mentioned
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I—
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.
Use this in gs4 questions of perseverance, risk taking by a civil servant, courage, dedication, patience, innovation, entrepreneurship, case studies and essay on similar topics.

The above shloka on anger would have increased your 1/2 to 1 mark minimum in your answers in UPSC gs4,2016 (questions 7,13).
अतिरोषणश्चक्षुष्मानन्ध एव जनः।
An exceedingly angry person is blind even when possessing eyes.
This shloka is taken from Harshacharita of Banabhatta.
Bottom line:Anger is a completely normal, usually healthy, human emotion. Anger is a natural, adaptive response to threats; it inspires powerful, often aggressive, feelings and behaviors, which allow us to fight and to defend ourselves when we are attacked. A certain amount of anger, therefore, is necessary to our survival.
But when it gets out of control and turns destructive, it can lead to problems—problems at work, in your personal relationships, and in the overall quality of your life. It can lead to distraction from the goal and the person shall have trouble in concentrating and focussing. Anger leads to suppression of the rational part of the brain and the emotional part of the brain takes control of the individual. Such a person places the locus of control outside himself/herself and remains a mute spectator. Excessive anger can cloud the judgement of a person, one may even be unable to see the facts of the situation. It can aggravate the problem rather than solving it. It affects the long term relationship of a person with others and also tarnishes his/her image. One should know how to ‘tame the beast’ .One should always think before speaking. Toning down of words even conveys the message effectively to the other person. It may solve the problem to a larger extent. External factors which have the potential to make a person angry can't be controlled largely. They are beyond an individual's 'zone of influence'. But,there is always a ‘choice’. You have a choice 'how to respond to them'. That is your 'zone of discretion'. Diverting your attention to positive things, sharing your feelings with near and dear ones, concentrating on good memories, humour etc. can go a long way in anger management. One should know how to channelize the anger in the right direction and is the right manner.
Use this gs 4 questions of anger management, case studies relating to work environment, calming of public anger say for example death in man-wildlife conflict, land acquisition for developmental projects, essay on similar topics.

The above shloka can be used in essay paper 2020(essay 6 and 7),gs 4,2019 (question 9) case study on sexual harassment. One shloka can change the entire outlook of your answer. It's time to go old school.😊
यत्र नार्यस्तु पूज्यन्ते रमन्ते तत्र देवताः।
यत्रैतास्तु न पूज्यन्ते सर्वास्तत्राफला क्रिया:॥
Where women are honoured, divinity blossoms there.
And where they are Dishonoured, all actions remain unfruitful.
This shloka is taken from Manusmriti,Chapter 3,Verse 56.
Bottom line:A family, society and nation can be developed and prosperous only when women have equal rights and opportunities to utilise their potential, talent and bring out the best version of themselves. Such a family, society and nation is blessed with wealth, knowledge and happiness. Vandana Shiva even said "With the violation of nature is linked the violation and marginalization of women, especially in the Third World. Women produce and reproduce life not merely biologically, but also through their social role in providing sustenance.“ If women are marginalised, not given rights, opportunities to develop, then a family, society and nation can't progress and even it's deterioration is certain. Just like a cart cannot move on one wheel, a bird can't fly with one wing similarly a nation cannot progress if half the population are marginalised. Recently, in Olympics it is a matter of great pride for us to see how women have brought glory and honour for our nation , and hence proved their mettle.
Use this in gs1 women empowerment related questions, gs 2 questions of government schemes for vulnerable sections, gs 4 feminist ethics, case studies related to sexual harassment and essay on women empowerment.
Comment below if you know what 'ecofeminism' is.(Hint: answer is hidden in the 'Bottom line')

Upsc Civil Service Examination Essay paper 2020. The above doha as introduction will be a unique way and it would have impressed the examiner.
कबीरा सोई पीर है, जो जाने पर पीर ।
जो पर पीर न जानही, सो का पीर में पीर ।
Only those who understand pain of others are gentleman. The existence of a person who don't understand others pain is useless.
This doha is of Bhakti Saint Kabir Das.
Bottom line:Empathy is one of the cardinal values to differentiate a good person and a bad person. If a person is able to view the world from the lens of other people, living beings and has the ability to imagine walking in the shoes of others then, that person is a gentleman. Those who fail to empathise with others are a burden on the Earth. So,as human beings it is our bounden duty to help other living beings. Also in the field of pubic administration, empathy is one of the hallmarks of a good civil servant. Such a civil servant will go beyond her comfort zone to make a difference in the lives of the "poor naked wretches","houseless heads" and "unfed sides" (if one may quote Shakespeare's King Lear).
Use this in gs 4 questions of empathy, qualities of a good civil servant, compassion, creating good work environment, saving wildlife, forests, tackling disasters, pandemics like COVID-19,international ethics, case studies where utmost devotion to public service is needed, empathy required to face hardships to help the deprived and vulnerable and essay on similar topics.

दातव्यमिति यद्दानं दीयतेऽनुपकारिणे |
देशे काले च पात्रे च तद्दानं सात्त्विकं स्मृतम् || 20||
datavyam iti yad danam diyate ‘nupakarine
deshe kale cha patre cha tad danam sattvikam smritam
This shloka is from Bhagwad Gita,Chapter 17, Verse 20.
dātavyam—worthy of charity; iti—thus; yat—which; dānam—charity; dīyate—is given; anupakāriṇe—to one who cannot give in return; deśhe—in the proper place; kāle—at the proper time; cha—and; pātre—to a worthy person; cha—and; tat—that; dānam—charity; sāttvikam—in the mode of goodness; smṛitam—is stated to be
Charity given to a worthy person simply because it is right to give, without consideration of anything in return, at the proper time and in the proper place, is stated to be in the mode of goodness.
Bottom line:Charity should be given to the person who really deserves it. This applies to the sphere of governance too,as subsidies should be given to those who really deserve not to the well-off."Give Up LPG subsidy" campaign by our PM was a step in this regard. However, charity should be done by individuals as a matter of duty not a means for purification from one's sins. It should not be seen as a shortcut to 'heaven'. It should be unconditional and without any strings attached. A person doing charity shouldn't expect anything in return. There shouldn't be any expectation of recognition and glorification.
By cultivating the mentality to give in the service of Krishna, we relish a joy that lies beyond both the pain of losing our hard-earned money and the pleasure of being glorified as charitable – the spiritual joy of selfless devotion. This joy eventually brings complete and everlasting fulfillment, which is the best fruit of charity, indeed the ultimate perfection of life. So the government, the civil servants have a duty to serve other fellow beings, without expectation of any return. The support should be in a right manner and right time. The government should focus on enhancing the capability of individuals so that they live a life they cherish rather than handing out doles. (Amartya Sen's capability approach). Even the government interventions should be at an early stage, say for that matter in health and education. Also, there should be purity of means and end. One cannot justify corruption by stating that one does charity. So given the increase in poverty in the backdrop of the global pandemic, charity,as a matter of duty,an idea from Bhagwad Gita seems the way forward.
Use this in gs1 society questions of deprivation, poverty,gs 2 questions of targeting governments of schemes,gs3 questions of human development,gs 4 questions of charity, public service, selflessness, charity, utilisation of government funds, issues related to aids to under-developed and developing countries, case studies and essay on similar themes.

समुद्रवसने देवि पर्वतस्तनमण्डले ।
विष्णुपत्नि नमस्तुभ्यं पादस्पर्शं क्षमस्वमे ॥
(Oh Mother Earth) The Devi Who is having Ocean as Her Garments and Mountains as Her Bosom, Who is the Consort of Sri Vishnu, I Bow to You; Please Forgive Us for Touching You with Our Feet.
The specific source of mantra couldn't be found ,but it is part of the corpus of our ancient texts.
The mantra is dedicated to the Divine Mother of Earth, who nurtures all beings.
Through this divine mantra, the chanter and the listener seek forgiveness for themselves, and for all the pain they may have caused others in the past. The Samudra Vasane Devi is dedicated to Bhoomi Devi or the Goddess of Earth. In Hindu mythology, Bhoomi Devi is considered the divine consort of Varaha.Traditionally, this mantra is practiced every morning, before placing your feet on the ground.
Bottom line:Our ancient texts have a deep sense of reverence and gratitude towards the Mother Earth. Our mythology has given the stature of Mother to the planet.Just like mother nurtures and nourishes us throughout our lives, similarly Earth also provides us with all the necessary resources for sustenance. We stand and rest on the Earth both literally and metaphorically. There should be gratitude in us towards Mother Earth and it is our bounden duty to protect and nurture the Earth. Unfortunately,we homosapiens have proved to be one of the most destructive species on the planet, despite being donning the hat of the most intelligent species on planet Earth. Industries, chimneys, vehicles polluting the pristine air, tonnes of toxic plastic in rivers and oceans which were once pure, eroding green cover and other species going extinct at an exponential rate. Is it not our duty to take care of our mother when she is ill?Is this justice to mother Earth? Are we doing justice to other species? Aren't we wise enough to understand that nobody cuts or should cut the branches on which they are sitting?Hope the wisdom of most evolved 'ape-species' shall prevail.😊
Use this in gs 3 questions of sustainable development goals(SDG's),Paris Agreement and Nationally Determined Contributions(NDC) targets by India,gs 4 questions of environmental ethics, case studies where balancing of environment and developmental needs are required and essay on similar themes.

धीरे-धीरे रे मना, धीरे सब कुछ होय,
माली सींचे सौ घड़ा, ॠतु आए फल होय।
This doha is of Kabir Das.
Have patience in your mind, with patience everything happens. Even if a gardener irrigates a plant with a hundred pots of water, fruits shall be borne by the plant only when right season comes.
Bottom line: To achieve success, one needs to have patience. Having patience can even help to achieve the impossible. Perseverance, dedication and faith in oneself are the qualities which are needed to achieve success. Tons of effort but for a short period of time, often leads to failure. It is the baby little steps, progressing with each and every day helps a person to attain his goal. Everything takes it own time. We must have heard our elders saying ' Rome was not built in a day'. Mirabai Chanu, the weightlifter who bagged the first medal in Tokyo Olympics for us,had been practicing for decades. She was completely broken after she failed to win a medal in Rio Olympics. But she had patience, she didn't give up instead she worked hard. Rest is history as they say. With the advent of technology, average human attention span is decreasing.Sadly, the young, tech-savvy generation needs quick, instant success,as if preparing a two- minute instant noodles.😊So the wisdom from the past, the Bhakti Saint Kabir Das's advice needs to be internalised.
Use this in gs4 questions of patience, perseverance, dedication,self- improvement, case studies which requires patience to deal with a problem and essay on similar themes.
