Police to get app for stop-and-searches

Police say they will launch a new app next month that will enable frontline police officers to verify a person’s ID more quickly, as they will no longer have to verify the information with colleagues in the office. The Privacy Commissioner says it's told the police that the proposed new app will have to comply with the Personal Data Ordinance, requiring steps be taken against unauthorised or accidental access to or loss of personal data. The force said officers will be given a mobile phone installed with the app, which they can use to scan a person’s ID card or passport. The data will be sent to the police server, and the app will then tell the officer whether the person in question is listed as wanted or missing. The new process will be a few minutes quicker than the current procedure, police said, adding it will also allow the call centre to focus on handling 999 emergency calls. Police said officers will start using the new app to stop and search people, vehicles and vessels next month, and around 2,800 officers…

Two buildings in To Kwa Wan put on lockdown Two residential buildings in To Kwa Wan are the latest to be placed under ambush-style lockdown by the government. It's the 10th straight evening officials have launched such operations, requiring residents to get tested for Covid-19. People who live in Kiu Yu Mansion and Kiu Fat Mansion on Lok Shan Road were ordered to stay at home as their samples were collected.A government spokesman said while no confirmed cases were recently recorded in the two buildings, sewage samples have tested positive."After assessment of the conditions of the buildings, as well as the potential risk of infection, the government decided to make a 'restriction-testing declaration' for the relevant area as a prudent measure," he said. Those who tested negative from Sunday and Tuesday won't need to take the test again.Authorities expect to complete the operation by 7:30am on Wednesday so people can get to work.Chief Executive Carrie Lam has said that there won't be any ambush lockdowns over the Chinese New Year holiday. 2021-02-09 19:28:38

Lockdown in Laguna City finds no Covid cases Hong Kong's third overnight lockdown and mass testing exercise found no positive cases of Covid-19 after testing more than 400 people at two private residential blocks in Lam Tin, the government said on Monday. Officials moved in at Blocks 5 and 7 of the Laguna City estate on Sunday evening, ordering people to take a test by 2am in the hope of being able to allow people to leave for work from 7am on Monday morning.People who could show a negative test result or a bracelet showing that they'd been tested were allowed to leave at about 7.30am on Monday. Government workers on site were still carrying out what was described as a law enforcement operation to find people who hadn't taken a test. Officials said they had tested 460 people at eight testing station as of 2am without finding any new cases. They visited 394 homes, getting no answer at 60 of them, some of which may have been vacant or home to people who had already tested positive or been sent to quarantine.Meanwhile, the administration condemned an attack on a government worker taking part in the testing exercise inside the restricted area. It sent condolences to the injured colleague and said people under mandatory testing should cooperate.Laguna City emerged as an area of concern last week, with officials ordering a partial evacuation of Block 5 after 10 residents and two staff were diagnosed with the virus. Flat E on each floor was evacuated after people on several floors fell ill, which experts said indicated vertical transmission. The government held the first of what Chief Executive Carrie Lam called "ambush-style" lockdowns in Yau Ma Tei on Tuesday, finding one case. A lockdown in North Point on Thursday found no cases. 2021-02-01 08:59:10
