1. Albany, New York (1911) — The Great Library Disaster On March 29, 1911, a massive fire swept through the New York State Capitol building in Albany. At the time, the upper floors of the Capitol housed the New York State Library and the State Archives. The Devastation: It is widely considered one of the worst library disasters of the modern era. The inferno completely destroyed roughly 450,000 books and 270,000 irreplaceable historical manuscripts dating back to the 1600s (including invaluable Dutch colonial records of New Netherland). Scorched pages of historic documents literally rained down like snowflakes over a 20-mile radius around Albany. 2. St. Augustine, Florida (1914) — The St. Augustine Fire On April 2, 1914, a devastating conflagration started in a local hotel kitchen and ripped through the historic heart of the city, spanning from St. George Street to the bay. The Devastation: The fire entirely consumed the St. Johns County Courthouse (which had just been built in 1907), along with six historic hotels, the local opera house, and the nearby Vedder Museum, wiping out a vast collection of local historical antiquities. 3. Taos, New Mexico (1932) — The Plaza Fire Just making the cutoff, a raging fire broke out on the north side of the historic Taos Plaza in the early months of 1932. The Devastation: The fire completely destroyed the Taos County Courthouse and Jail, along with several neighboring businesses.
