Once upon a time there was a king with three daughters. They were all exceptionally beautiful, but the youngest, Psyche, contained a beauty unlike ever seen before. In fact, she was so beautiful that people began to neglect the worship of Venus, the goddess of love and beauty. Venus became very jealous and asked her son Cupid to make Psyche fall in love with a monster. When he saw for himself just how beautiful she was, Cupid dropped the arrow meant for her and pricked himself. He falls in a deep, secret love for her. Psyche's parents, fearing that her beauty angered the gods, sends her to the top of a mountain where she was prophesied to meet her husband who was said to be such a monster that he was feared by even Jupiter and the inhabitants of the underworld. In obedience, Psyche goes to the mountain, but instead of meeting a monster, she wakes to find herself in a gorgeous palace, ministered to by invisible servants in the daytime, and joined by an invisible husband during the nights. She invites her sisters to the palace, where they become extremely jealous of her new life. They convince her that her unseen lover is truly a serpent who she must kill before he eats her. Psyche is persuaded, and that evening, dagger in hand, she lights her lamp only to discover that the object of her plot is the god Cupid himself. Wakened by a drop of oil from the lamp, Cupid flies away, never to return. Heartbroken, Psyche asks her mother-in-law Venus for assistance. Venus, still jealous and vindictive, assigns her a task to go into the underworld and ask Persephone for a portion of her beauty. She fulfills the task, but returning from the underworld she is overcome by a fatal curiosity and peeks into the beauty reserved for Venus. She falls unconscious. Cupid immediately flys to where Psyche lie and revives her. Both relieved, they share a passionate kiss. Venus finds peace with Psyche and allows the union between her and Cupid. Psyche was then turned into an immortal goddess and the union was celebrated amongst the gods. Cupid and Psyche live happily ever after, bound by an eternal love.
