Top Essay Mistake One common mistake a lot of applicants make is overmetaphorize their essays. Let me clarify. While reviewing essays, I saw a lot of people write creatively. Instead of using a direct way to communicate what happened, they use different devices like metaphor, parallels, sarcasm and more. It is valid that writing eloquently and creatively gives you points for uniqueness. However, you need to have audience awareness. The person reading your application is speedreader. He does not take long time like you reading out the essay orally. No. They do not have inner voice when reading. That is how you read fast. And when you write with metaphor, talking about cosmic relatvism and earth gravity, unless you have holy gift for it, you will present an obscure image to readers. As in the video, try to be more direct with your messaging. Do not circle around too much. Of course, showing is important. But things that might get the reader to misinterpret the reader are better avoided. Unless, again, you are a master writer. Always lean toward clarity. hey guys! tomorrow we are finishing the 4th cohort of the study program. i had office hours with 2 ppl and their reviews have been, like usual, fantastic and tranformative (in a literal sense). the games and debates we enaged in regarding the nature of existence, morality and wealth increased each student's understanding of those core components of life. i am not going to tell the games since they are for exclusive joy and leisure of students, but below, i will send you some books we read.

on College Essays One of the core components of your college application is the uniqueness of topics and insights you bring up in your essays. Quite often, applicants tend to bring up common insights and lessons and evidences from their personal experiences (e.g. sports injury, mun) or well-known facts and quotes (e.g. martin luther king jr's famous "i have a dream..." speech against racial segragation). These experiences and lessons of course are powerful and original in their own way. However, one thing you need to realize is how many people apply with similar stories. You are not the only person who talks about sports injury, MUN experience where you were open-minded, or a conversation you had with a smart relative. These stories are common. And it is no bad to tell them. The twist here is what and how you extracted the insight. For example, if you have uncommon creativity and skill with the word power, you can play with words and bring fresh imagery. But you need not assume that you are one unless you have had wild track record of creativity. The more effective strategy is to have constant dialogues with many people and learn their unique view on a topic from them. Or you can read books/papers/essays by the greats. And it is not that they are famous/great that we take insights from them. No, we are not trying to impress by namedropping a famous/influential scientist's name. That is not why we do it. Think about it. By studying these great minds, you gain profound insights that you can enlive your essays through. sititng on a desk with your macbook and google docs on, with a cup of hot espresso, you are writing about a time where you had to make an important and bold decision. suppose it was to start working. but it could go against principles of your families or society. This is an amazing essay topic choice. But we have learned from the past that amazing ideas do not count. What counts is execution. In the blank white google docs page, you are setting up the colorful description of the context, place and time of the event. Then you want to move to the conflict part. To maximize the effect, you need to bring a fresh perspective. One interesting idea would be to discuss how, say, Heidegger and Bertrund Russel would think about the decision. By doing a masterful, concise, and nuanced analysis, you could write a memorable piece, showing your approach to life and lessons you learned from it. One, it is interesting, unique and personal. Two, it is academic. After all, admissions officers are looking for students who will be doing rigorous learning and research with university professors for whom what you did in that specific paragraph or two is not a single move but a lifestyle. This way you can leave a powerful impression in the mind of admission officers. You can gain all these skills during the advanced english study group in just 2 weeks.
