While the proposed Convention aims to combat violence against women and girls, legal analysis reveals a major flaw: its core obligations are framed as aspirational goals and general guidelines 📋—lacking the status of binding, enforceable legal entitlements.
⚠️ Why does this matter?
Without watertight legal mechanisms, survivors cannot hold institutions accountable, risking weaker protections than existing regional tools like the Maputo Protocol 🛡.
Rights must be guaranteed, not just recommended! ✊
We need a stronger, more inclusive Convention that guarantees real, enforceable protection for every woman and girl 🤝.

After participating in the orientation on Safe Abortion Care (SAC) and Self-Managed Abortion (SMA), our 25 peer educators took the next step by bringing together fellow peers for peer-to-peer dialogue sessions.
Through these conversations, young people had the opportunity to discuss sensitive issues, ask questions, share perspectives, and engage with accurate information in a respectful and supportive environment.
This is the power of peer education: knowledge does not stop with one person. It is shared, discussed, questioned, and passed on, screating a wider circle of informed young people and more open conversations within the community.

| 8 |  +4As part of our International Youth Day 2026 commemoration, AfriYAN Ethiopia in collaboration with UNFPA Ethiopia and TaYA, recently visited the Association for Women’s Sanctuary and Development (AWSAD) for a solidarity and community service visit.
The visit was an opportunity for young people to move beyond conversations about gender-based violence and express solidarity through compassion, service, and meaningful engagement. We spent time learning from AWSAD’s work, contributing essential items, and creating a supportive and caring space for the women and girls at the shelter, in line with the organization’s safeguarding and confidentiality guidelines.
We remain committed to building a generation of young people who promote dignity, safety, empathy, and communities free from violence and discrimination.

Decades of data show that when safe abortion care is integrated into public health systems, communities benefit and complications associated with unsafe procedures can be significantly reduced.
Before legal reforms, unsafe procedures were a major contributor to maternal health complications. Expanding access to safe healthcare has since played an important role in protecting the health, well-being, and futures of women and girls.
Under Ethiopia’s Revised Criminal Code, safe and legal abortion care is accessible under specific circumstances.
The integration of these services into the health system means that eligible individuals can seek care from trained healthcare professionals in appropriate health facilities, with confidentiality and safety at the center of service delivery.

AfriYAN Ethiopia , in partnership with TaYA and the Sidama Regional Youth and Adolescent Health Council, proudly celebrated International Youth Day 2026 in Hawassa City under the theme “Diverse Youth Knowledge for a Shared Vision.”
The two-day celebration brought young people together through tree planting and environmental activities, a cultural and artistic evening, and a meaningful panel discussion.
The forum highlighted the importance of youth well-being, meaningful participation, and collective action, calling on government institutions, youth organizations, civil society, and other stakeholders to work together to create an enabling environment where young people can thrive and contribute to positive change.
The celebration also reaffirmed that young people are not only citizens of the future, but citizens and agents of change today. 🙌

On 15 August 2026, TaYA, in partnership with the St. Paul Institute for Reproductive Health and Rights (SPIRHR), conducted a one-day orientation on Safe Abortion Care (SAC) and Self-Managed Abortion (SMA) for 25 peer educators.
The orientation strengthened participants’ technical understanding while equipping them with communication skills and stigma-sensitive approaches to facilitate accurate, respectful, and informed conversations within their communities.
As trusted peers, these young people can play an important role in creating spaces where adolescents and youth can ask questions, challenge misconceptions, and seek reliable information about their health without fear of judgment.
