Modern Authentication (also called OAuth 2.0) lets mail clients obtain short-lived access tokens from Active Directory Federation Services (AD FS) instead of repeatedly sending usernames and passwords. This closes a client gap for organizations that already use AD FS Modern Authentication on desktop Outlook and the native Mail apps on Apple devices.
