Recognition and preservation of cultural practices that are sustainable, meaningful, and community-centered. Support of women and girls whose livelihoods depend on traditional, eco-friendly practices. Stronger public awareness and enforcement to prevent the normalization of harmful plastic alternatives. What You Can Do: Starting Today Dispose of plastic qetema if you are already using it. Tell a friend to tell a friend about the negative impacts of plastic qetema and encourage immediate action. Use your social media platforms to raise awareness and join our campaign for sustainable, culturally rooted alternatives. 3. Health Effects: Plastics contain synthetic chemicals linked to major public health concerns. Exposure has been associated with cancers, immune and reproductive system damage, cognitive impairment, developmental delays (IPEN, 2022), as well as cardiovascular and chronic kidney diseases (Pilapitiya & Ratnayake, 2024). 4. Soil and Water Contamination Plastic does not decompose and poses long-term threats to soil and water bodies, endangering aquatic ecosystems and degrading land quality (Kehinde et al., 2020). 5. Urban Flooding: Plastic can persist in the environment for up to 1,000 years (Obebe & Adamu, 2020). Its accumulation blocks drainage systems, significantly worsening urban flooding, an increasingly common challenge in Ethiopian cities (Nnoko, 2024). 6. Impact on Livelihoods: For many girls and women, selling fresh grass during holiday seasons is a vital source of income. Widespread acceptance of plastic qetema directly threatens these livelihoods, further deepening gendered economic vulnerabilities. 7. Aesthetic and Cultural Loss: Replacing fresh grass with plastic qetema risks eroding cultural identity and traditions that have been passed down for generations. What appears to be a simple decoration choice carries deep cultural meaning.

Environmental Pollution: Ethiopia’s average annual plastic use per capita increased from 700 grams in 2007 to a projected 3.8 kg in 2022, a significant 540% rise in just 15 years (NRSP, 2021). If plastic qetema becomes widely adopted, this figure will increase even more dramatically, worsening the country’s plastic waste crisis. 2. Impact on Wildlife: Plastic pollution poses a serious threat to wildlife and has the potential to contaminate human food chains (Obebe & Adamu, 2020). Animals can ingest plastic or become entangled in it, often leading to injury or death (Pavani & Rajeswari, 2014).
