Why you celebrate your birthday on Janmashtami? A gentleman once asked me a very interesting question. He said: "You ask people not to throw flowers, puja material, or ashes into rivers because it pollutes them. You even discourage the immersion of ashes in the Ganga. But at the same time, you celebrate your birthday on Janmashtami and follow the Hindu calendar. Isn’t that selective?” Honestly, it was a fair question. My answer was simple: This is called evolving. I was born on Janmashtami, according to the Hindu calendar. So every year, I celebrate my birthday based on the Hindu calendar and the tithi on which I was born. Yes, my official documents have a fixed date according to the English calendar. But personally, I connect my birthday with the Hindu calendar because that is how my family and I have traditionally celebrated it. Then he asked: “If you follow traditions when it comes to your birthday, why do you oppose certain other traditions, such as immersing ashes, flowers, and puja materials in rivers?” And that is where the real conversation begins. Respecting traditions does not mean refusing to evolve. Real answer is balancing. Our traditions connect us with our roots, our culture, and our identity. They give us a sense of belonging. But we also have to understand the time we are living in. Some practices may have made sense in a different era, under different environmental conditions. But today, when our rivers are already struggling with pollution, population pressure, industrial waste, and urbanisation, we have to ask ourselves: Can we continue every old practice in exactly the same way without considering its impact on the present and the future? For me, evolution does not mean rejecting our past. It means understanding it. It means preserving what connects us with our values and identity, while changing what may harm our society, environment, or future. We should not blindly leave every tradition behind. But we should also not blindly follow everything just because it has been done for generations. The real wisdom lies in knowing the difference. Stay connected to your roots. Respect your faith. Celebrate your traditions. But also have the courage to evolve. Because if we refuse to change with time and circumstances, time will eventually leave us behind. This is why I can celebrate my birthday on Janmashtami, according to the Hindu calendar, and at the same time advocate for protecting our rivers from practices that can contribute to pollution. There is no contradiction. That is evolution. And I believe this is something every young person—and in fact, every individual—needs to understand: 👉 What should we preserve from our past? 👉 What should we improve? 👉 And what should we leave behind for a better future? Staying rooted and evolving with time can go hand in hand. Radhe Radhe 🙏 Happy Janmashtami
