This floral cloud of cosmic dust and gas is a reflection nebula, meaning it glows due to the scattering of the light from its central star. The Iris Nebula is also known as Caldwell 4 - a member of the Caldwell Catalog compiled by Sir Patrick Moore - and NGC 7023. The petal-like structure that gives the Iris Nebula its nickname is 6 lightyears in diameter. The Cave Nebula (Sh2-155) lies at distance of 2,400 light-years in the constellation Cepheus. It is a large star-forming cloud of molecular hydrogen spanning approximately 10 light-years. Hot class O and B blue supergiant stars to the upper right of the image are ionizing the cloud's hydrogen gas, causing it to glow at the hydrogen-alpha wavelength of 656.28 nanometers. As their intense light evaporates gas from the cloud surface, it becomes ionized and the fierce stellar winds emitted by those stars blow it back against the cloud, forming a glowing, compressed rim. Here is a short 45-minute live stack of the propeller nebula, DWB111. DWB-111, the Propeller Nebula, is an emission nebula in the constellation Cygnus. Astronomers seem to have more questions than answers, regarding this nebula. The origin of the peculiar structure is still completely unknown. The nebula's distance and source of excitation are also undetermined. DWB-111 mass is believed to be quite low, probably less than 50 solar masses. These three bright nebulae are often featured on telescopic tours of the constellation Sagittarius and the crowded starfields of the central Milky Way. In fact, 18th century cosmic tourist Charles Messier cataloged two of them; M8, the large nebula above and left of center, and colorful M20 near the bottom of the frame. The third emission region includes NGC 6559, right of M8 and separated from the larger nebula by a dark dust lane. All three are stellar nurseries about five thousand light-years or so distant. Over a hundred light-years across the expansive M8 is also known as the Lagoon Nebula. M20's popular moniker is the Trifid. Glowing hydrogen gas creates the dominant red color of the emission nebulae. In striking contrast, blue hues in the Trifid are due to dust reflected starlight.
