And then you have the alchemical stage of calcinatio symbolised by Gollum being consumed (the "dross", i.e. shadow that no longer serves) as Frodo saw clearly his own Will to Power.
It’s the Scorpio (Gollum) transmutation from worm to "THE EAGLE[S] ARE COMING!" (see also phoenix). Smeagol was also redeemed in those final moments in The Cracks of Doom. You see it in his eyes... Peace. And note that there are three eagles sent... for Gandalf wanted to have "Gollum" saved too... but to me this is symbolic of Smeagol (again: Scorpio) transcending his Will to Power (over others) and "gained his wings".
LOTR is as much Gollum's Hero's Journey as it is Frodo's. Which is why I am SO excited for these next movies.

“I've been quiet for a wee while.
It's been interesting sitting with things instead of reacting to every headline the moment it lands. You get to understand a lot more when you step far enough back to notice patterns.
What's been pulling at me though, is these fires across Europe. France, Spain, Portugal, Greece, Croatia & now Norfolk.
Different countries, different landscapes, burning almost at once.
And I keep asking over & over, what if we've seen this before?
Maybe not in our lifetime, but much further back.
What if there's something about fire our ancestors understood, that we've forgotten?
Long before Christianity moved through Europe, fire was more than a physical element. Our ancestors named it, built gods around it, feared it & honoured it in the same breath.
Because they understood that fire has two faces.
It destroys.
And it transforms.
The Romans had Vulcan, god of destructive fire. His festival falls on August 23rd, during the hottest, driest stretch of the year, when grain stores & settlements were most exposed. Fires were lit & offerings made to a force they knew they couldn't control.
And here we are, approaching that same point in August, watching fire move through ancient European lands again.
Coincidence, perhaps.
But what if the interesting part isn't whether it's a coincidence? What if it's the symbolism?
Because the story of sacred fire runs much wider than Rome.
Across the old Celtic world, fire marked thresholds, the turning of seasons, the movement from one cycle into another.
Across the Slavic world, sacred fire belonged to the forge, where something entered in one form & emerged as something else.
In Greece, Hephaestus held the fire of the forge, the fire that transforms, while Hestia held its other face, the hearth flame, the fire protecting the centre of the home.
Rome called her Vesta.
Different lands, different gods, different centuries.
Yet the same element.
So what if history doesn't always repeat itself through identical events?
What if sometimes it repeats an element?
Our ancestors understood nature as a cycle.
Fire consumes the old growth. The land blackens. For a while, it looks as though nothing could possibly survive.
But underneath, life still holds.
Seeds open. Nutrients return to the soil. Eventually new growth pushes through blackened ground.
Destruction.
Transformation.
Renewal.
And that's where another question has been sitting with me. What if the symbolism of fire isn't only about destruction?
Look at the world around us.
Things hidden for years, sometimes generations, are being dragged into the light. Old narratives are being questioned. Age old Institutions are under scrutiny. Things once whispered about are becoming increasingly difficult to look away from.
And what does fire do?
It exposes.
It illuminates.
It burns through coverings & strips things to their bare structure until there's nowhere left for the rot to hide.
I'm not suggesting the physical fires themselves are some kind of divine cleansing. Real people are experiencing real devastation, & it's wrong to romanticise that.
I'm asking something different.
What if what we're witnessing now is a modern event carrying a very ancient archetype?
History doesn't have to repeat the same event to echo itself.
Sometimes an old element returns & right now, while fire moves through some of Europe's oldest landscapes, we are also living through a period of extraordinary exposure.
What if the deeper symbolism isn't destruction?
What if it's more of a revelation?
Thousands of years ago, people stood on these lands, looked into flame & saw something powerful enough to make it sacred.
They understood fire as a threshold, an ending capable of holding a beginning inside it.
What if that's why watching old Europe burn feels strangely ancient, not simply alarming?
The names are gone.
The temples fell.
Most of the old gods have been forgotten.

And in that moment she senses the cool water nearby, and hears the tree’s leaves in the wind. The sun shines on her face and she smiles because she understands.
