The wreckage has been so utter and extensive that every attempt to repair it is bound to fail. Synthesis of Brāhma and Kṣāttra in the Teaching and Lives of Sri Krishna, Chanakya and Vidyaranya Swami   Śrīkṛṣṇa can be regarded as an inimitable symbol of the brāhma-kṣāttra harmony. Only Kṛṣṇa has shown us the ultimate pinnacle of excellence of brāhma and kṣāttra.    Kṛṣṇa unambiguously declared that punishment of evil and protection of virtue were two faces of the same coin known as dharma. In his behaviour and actions, we notice the exact place for values such as truth, non-violence, forgiveness and magnanimity. This is why our tradition respects him as the supreme teacher of samanvaya (synthesis).   As long as our political leaders and kings had walked in Kṛṣṇa’s path, they had no confusion in values. Therefore, they did not have to suffer the ignominy of becoming slaves of foreigners. The moment we distanced from his vision, we were confronted with all kinds of calamities. Harmony between Brāhma and Kṣāttra in the Sanatana Tradition   RIGHT FROM THE VEDIC ERA, the Indian tradition has accorded an exalted status to the harmony between brāhma and kṣāttra.   The conception of brāhma and kṣāttra in the Vedic corpus must not be boxed within the narrow confines of jāti or varṇa, mere accidents of birth.   In reality, both brāhma and kṣāttra are tenets that take the society forward. The Amritpal Singh Saga is a Flopped Low-Budget Gangster Movie   The Dubai import named Amritpal Singh – the self-proclaimed leader of the Khalistani separatist outfit Waris Panjab De – remains underground. With the National Security Act slapped on him and his key aides, the story is playing out like a low-budget gangster movie with Amritpal and his pals accused of stashing weapons allegedly supplied by the ISI.   Amritpal, instead of becoming the flashy mob leader with his convoy of luxury cars, has now been reduced to a criminal on the run on a motorbike and most recently, on a motorized cart. -- Do read this sharp and biting commentary by Rami N. Technical and Literary Education in the Vijayanagara Empire   Skill, competence, excellence and expertise in technical subjects was cultivated generationally, often at home. The boy started very early under his father’s tutelage. For hours each day, he patiently learned the techniques and nuances of the particular craft or profession.   But the real emphasis was absorbing the spirit of the profession, which transcended these external, mechanical aspects. The spirit elevates the profession and can’t be taught in a classroom.    The ultimate goal was the acquisition of mastery, a word that has all but disappeared today. Today’s generalist sees only the forest but can’t identify the trees. Contours of the Educational Atmosphere in the Vijayanagara Empire   Education is one area which flourished in an unprecedented fashion under the nourishing shelter of the Vijayanagara Rayas. This essay provides some contours of the profound educational atmosphere in that era. In fact, a separate book can be devoted to exploring this subject in detail.    The Pyal (also spelled, Pial) system of schooling was one of the central educational systems of the Vijayanagara Empire. This was flourishing in Tamil Nadu even a century ago.   Every village or a cluster of villages had a school of its own. Classes were conducted on the verandah of a house or in the porch of a temple. The typical elementary syllabus included a basic course in reading, writing and arithmetic. Children from all socio-economic strata were freely admitted. Fees was not mandatory. The teacher was remunerated in kind or cash by parents who could afford it or by some philanthropist.   The community would take care of education while the Rayas performed their Dharma as its enablers. There is much value in this setup and approach — serious damage occurs if the ruling class directly interferes in education… our experience of the last seven-plus decades only proves this point. -- Read the whole piece!
