🔆 SITAPUR 250 MW SOLAR-BESS
📍 Context
✅ The Union Raksha Mantri has approved the development of India’s first-of-its-kind 250 MW Solar Power Project with an integrated Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) at Sitapur, Uttar Pradesh.
📍 What is the Sitapur Solar-BESS Project?
✅ A utility-scale renewable energy project spread over ~850 acres of vacant defence land at the former Sitapur Cantonment
✅ To be implemented by NTPC Limited through a competitive bidding process
✅ Functions as a smart microgrid, integrating solar power generation with battery energy storage
📍 How Does It Work?
✅ Photovoltaic Panels: Convert sunlight into DC electricity
✅ Power Conversion System (PCS): Converts DC into AC power for grid use or battery charging
✅ Battery Energy Storage System (BESS): Stores surplus electricity in lithium-ion or sodium-ion batteries
✅ Battery Management System (BMS) & Energy Management System (EMS): Monitor battery health, temperature and charge for safe and efficient operation
✅ Peak Shaving & Time Shifting: Stored energy is supplied during night-time or cloudy conditions, ensuring uninterrupted power
📍 Key Features
✅ 250 MW integrated Solar + BESS for dedicated green energy supply
✅ Productive utilisation of 850 acres of unused defence land
✅ Competitive bidding by NTPC helps reduce long-term electricity procurement costs
✅ Battery storage provides instant grid balancing, frequency regulation and backup support
✅ Eliminates dependence on fossil-fuel-based backup generators
📍 Significance
✅ Strengthens energy security for defence establishments through a reliable and independent power source
✅ Enhances grid stability by integrating renewable energy with storage technology
✅ Reduces dependence on conventional energy sources, lowering carbon emissions
✅ Generates long-term cost savings for the government through clean energy adoption
✅ Supports India’s goals of energy transition, self-reliance and sustainable defence infrastructure
