Sometimes I forget that this channel is actually supposed to be my personal blog...so I'm gonna share something "bloggy" today on a topic that I've been following closely for the last few years — artificial intelligence (or AI). If anyone has been following along with trends and the news recently, they're likely aware of discussion surrounding new AI technology such as ChatGPT among others subjects like OpenAI, Microsoft's new AI-powered search engine and Google Bard. The things that we thought to be science-fiction not even a few years ago are rapidly proliferating the computer landscape in ways that we couldn't have predicted...and quite frankly, it's a bit scary. There are many questions surrounding how these technologies will impact people on both a micro and macro scale. AI may currently seem like a passing novelty that we use for entertainment in the form of TikTok filters, silly voice changers or to get some menial task done using a LLM to write an email or put together some code for a project. However, on the research side, we're beginning to see organizations leveraging AI-powered technologies to uproot or change entire industries. We've already seen this in the artistic community where generative-AI models can use data sets to produce new art. And it likely won't be long before it can produce original content of its own; endangering entire job markets for artists and designers. This is only one example of the many ways that AI can impact people. The inevitable economic, political, and social impacts that AI technologies will have are immense! Not to mention, on top of the societal impacts, researchers are now beginning to see hints of emotional intelligence and sentience from some AI models. Only now are the companies responsible for honing these AI technologies beginning to understand the dangerous ramifications of what they're creating. The genie is out of the bottle and life as we know it will change forever—hopefully for the better. However, that will entirely depends on what we as human beings do next like after we created the atomic bomb all those decades ago. This is a critical moment in human history. I recently watched an interview with Mo Gawdat—an AI expert—that touched on this exact topic. I'd highly recommend giving it a listen as it's very thought provoking and introspective. It's a long interview in a podcast format, so it's something you can throw on and listen to in the background (and yeah, the thumbnail is a bit clickbait-y so just ignore that...it's a good interview). I feel these are important things to really think about because it will inevitably impact all of us sooner rather than later.
