آنگاه تخت بزرگ و سفیدی دیدم، و کسی را که بر آن نشسته بود. آسمان و زمین از حضور او می‌گریختند و جایی برای آنها نبود. و مردگان را دیدم، چه خُرد و چه بزرگ، که در برابر تخت ایستاده بودند. و دفترها گشوده شد. دفتری دیگر نیز گشوده شد که دفتر حیات است. مردگان بر حسب اعمالشان، مطابق با آنچه که در آن دفترها نوشته شده بود، داوری شدند. دریا مردگانی را که در خود داشت، پس داد؛ مرگ و جهانِ مردگان نیز مردگان خود را پس دادند، و هر کس بر حسب اعمالی که انجام داده بود، داوری شد. و مرگ و جهانِ مردگان به دریاچۀ آتش افکنده شد. دریاچۀ آتش، مرگ دوّم است. و هر که نامش در دفتر حیات نوشته نشده بود، به دریاچۀ آتش افکنده شد.”
