| 2 | 🥷 TrustTunnel v1.2 is now in the Mac App Store
Let’s be honest: not everyone enjoys messing around in the Terminal. Until now, macOS users had to dive into the command line just to get TrustTunnel running. With the release of version 1.2, those days are officially behind us!
TrustTunnel is now a fully native app you can download directly from the Mac App Store. No more command lines, no more complex setups — just a smooth experience with native macOS features:
• Familiar interface: User-friendly and intuitive right from the start
• Menu Bar icon: Check your connection status with a single glance
• Auto-start: The app boots up with your system and connects instantly
• Easy log export: You can now grab error logs in just a few clicks (and this feature is now live on all platforms)
👀 Missed the original release? What exactly is TrustTunnel?
It’s a modern, open-source VPN protocol. We originally built it here at AdGuard VPN for our own needs, but now anyone is free to use and implement it.
TrustTunnel delivers fast, secure connections without the usual VPN slowdowns. Its superpower is that it disguises its traffic to look exactly like regular website visits (HTTPS). ISPs and deep-packet inspection systems simply can't tell the difference, which means they can't throttle your speed or block your access. The result: rock-solid internet and total privacy.
Leave the Terminal to the geeks — download the user-friendly Mac version straight from the App Store | 1 253 |

| 6 | AI and productivity: Where’s the line between “helpful assistant” and “doing the work for you”?
Fun fact: According to a RAND study, most students who use AI for homework are actually worried it’s ruining their critical thinking. When even kids sense a trap, you know it's real.
We’ll grudgingly admit that neural networks make decent sidekicks (or let's be honest, crutches) for work and study. But critical thinking and problem-solving are muscles — just like walking or cooking. If you constantly outsource them to AI, those muscles will eventually atrophy.
To help you fix your love-hate relationship with AI, we put together a quick guide on how to use it right:
✅ When to let AI take the wheel:
• ELI5 (Explain Like I'm 5): This is the ultimate use case. Ask AI to break down complex theories, physics concepts, or laws using relatable, everyday examples
• Spotting mistakes: Solve the problem yourself first, then ask the neural network to find your errors and explain where you went wrong
• Outlines & structure: Ask AI to draft an essay outline, structure your sources, or brainstorm 5 ideas to kickstart a project
❌ When AI kills your ability to learn:
• Generating essays and reports from scratch
• Blind copy-pasting: Stealing answers and formulas without understanding the logic behind them
• Outsourcing your brain: Never let an algorithm do the actual thinking for you
💡 A quick privacy PSA: Most "free" AI bots and wrappers pay the bills through ads, hidden subscriptions, or by straight-up selling your prompts and data. Treat them with the same caution you would any sketchy freeware. | 1 743 |
| 7 | 🤫 The secret cheat code for perfect focus
Over the last few days, we’ve talked a lot about digital security. Between aggressive trackers, unhinged pop-ups, and scammers hunting for your passwords, just trying to focus online has turned into an extreme sport.
It doesn't have to be this way.
Grab our traditional discounts to help you sort out your online privacy once and for all, so you can finally go about your business in peace:

| 8 | 📚 AdGuard's end-of-summer reading list
Here’s what you probably didn't read this summer because you were out touching grass and living your best life (as you should).
Time to get up to speed before September rolls around:
🕶️ Breaking down how Meta’s AI smart glasses flunked the privacy test (again) and proved they're just another creepy surveillance tool
⚽ Looking back at this summer’s biggest football tournament to calculate exactly how much a single stadium hydration break actually cost
🕵️♂️ For the true-crime fans: diving into the Okello Chatrie case and how its outcome could impact the privacy of millions of users
Relax, we’re skipping the "What I did this summer" essay. We're adults, after all | 1 221 |

| 11 | 🎚 The third currency: your choice
This is the final part of our three-day breakdown. Attention and data theft are at least somewhat noticeable. But your freedom of choice is taken away quietly, baked right into default settings and sneaky dark patterns.
How websites manipulate you:
🌟The illusion of consent: When a cookie banner features a clear, honest “Reject All” button, 50–70% of users opt out of tracking. But if that button is hidden behind a second menu or disguised as a tiny link, rejections plummet below 10%. That’s proof that dark patterns are effective
🌟Tracking before you even click: Out of 250,000+ websites analyzed, only 15% meet basic cookie banner compliance. More than half activate trackers the moment you land on the page, before you even touch a button. Regulators have dished out massive penalties for this: France’s CNIL fined Google €150 million and Meta €60 million specifically because opting out was made significantly harder than opting in
The worst offender comes from inside the ad-blocking industry itself
Some popular ad blockers ship with an “Acceptable Ads” whitelist enabled by default. Big corporations pay these developers to get whitelisted, so their ads bypass protection right out of the box.
According to a 2025 study by NYU Tandon, users with this feature turned on were exposed to problematic ads 13.6% more often than people who didn’t use an ad blocker at all! On top of that, roughly 10% of ads served to minors violated child safety regulations.
We publicly opposed this practice back in 2016 and haven’t budged since: AdGuard never adds websites to a whitelist based on "acceptability" or behind-the-scenes deals.
You can manually enable search ads in your settings if you find them useful, but nobody pays us a dime for it.
That’s the core difference between “we decided for you” and “you make the call.” | 1 610 |
| 12 | 🥷 AdGuard VPN Browser Extension v2.11 is here!
We’ve made the extension even faster and smoother for everyday use. Here is what’s new:
🌟Connect and disconnect in one click
You can now toggle the VPN on and off directly from the right-click context menu, no need to open the extension popup window. It’s a small detail, but it saves time every single day.
Fun fact: this feature was suggested by one of our users on GitHub. We listened and built it. If you have ideas on how to make AdGuard VPN even better, don’t hesitate to send them our way!
🌟More reliable exclusions for top-level domains
We fixed how exclusions handle top-level domains. Entries like .com or .co.uk now match and trigger correctly without any hiccups.
And, of course, we squashed a few minor bugs and boosted overall stability.
Update now, give it a spin, and let us know what you think! Read the full release breakdown on our blog. | 1 109 |
| 13 | AdGuard VPN for Windows v2.10: Accessibility improvements
This release marks a major milestone: we’ve wrapped up the extensive accessibility work we started back in version 2.8. AdGuard VPN is now seamless for everyone, regardless of how you interact with your device. Here is what’s changed:
🌟Full keyboard navigation
You can now use the entire app without a mouse — zero functionality lost. We’ve revamped focus navigation across the entire interface: no sudden jumps or getting stuck. Moving around the app is now logical, predictable, and fast
🌟Proper screen reader support
Screen readers now accurately recognize and announce UI elements, including their names, types, and current status. The last remaining unadapted sections (Exclusions, Statistics, and Advanced settings) have become fully accessible
Accessibility is an ongoing journey. If you rely on screen readers, keyboard navigation, or other assistive technologies, we’d love to hear your thoughts! Your feedback directly helps us make the app better for everyone.

| 15 | 🕵️ The second currency: your data
Today, we’re looking at what stays hidden behind the scenes. The golden rule of the digital economy is simple: if you’re not paying for the product, you are the product.
We often think we’re scoring a freebie or just using a convenient tool, but we’re actually paying with our digital footprint:
🌟 “Free” VPNs: A massive study on free Android VPNs showed that over 80% of them (some with 100M+ downloads) leak your Android Advertising ID, location, and device data directly to ad networks. They love promising a “strict no-logs policy,” but act like glorified spyware
🌟 AI services & monetizing downtime: Developers are now being offered cash to watch ads while waiting for AI models to generate code (like the Kickbacks project). It sounds like a fair revenue split on paper, but in exchange, they harvest a detailed digital profile: work hours, prompt frequency, OS info, and prompt inputs
🌟Everyday websites: It happens everywhere. We ran a standard set of web pages through our traffic analyzer: 233 companies were receiving data about a single person's activity
Don’t just take our word for it, try this 1-minute test yourself:
1. Open any website: best to test on sites you haven't visited before, or clear your cookies first / use a different browser
2. Wait for the cookie banner to pop up
3. Look for the “Our partners” or “Vendor list” link, there will be a number attached to it
Websites are required to disclose this count on the banner. For context, the official IAB vendor registry currently lists over 1,200 ad-tracking companies.

| 18 | ⏱ Nothing on the internet is actually free. You’re always paying — just in different currencies
Over the next three days, we’re breaking down what “free” and “paid” content really costs you. Today’s currency: your attention, your time, and your device’s resources.
We did the math ourselves: with an ad blocker enabled, web pages load roughly 45% faster and consume 30–40% less data. This isn't just about a cleaner screen — it’s about saving gigabytes of bandwidth and reclaiming actual hours of your life.
Now, let’s talk about the stuff you’re already paying cold, hard cash for. A paid subscription used to guarantee a 100% ad-free experience. In 2025–2026, streaming giants completely flipped the script:
🌟Netflix: Phased out its cheapest ad-free option entirely. If you don't want ads, you're forced onto their premium plans starting at $19.99/month — or stuck watching commercials on the “budget” tier
🌟Amazon Prime Video: Turned on ads by default for all Prime subscribers, then jacked up the extra fee to remove them to $4.99/month — a 67% price hike just to get back the ad-free experience you originally paid for
🌟Disney+, Hulu & HBO Max: Every major player has repeatedly raised prices on ad-free tiers while pushing ad-supported plans that force you to sit through minutes of unskippable promos for every hour of watching
The choice used to be simple: you either paid with your money or paid with your time. Today, streaming services demand both. | 1 175 |

| 20 | 💚 The team behind uAssets, the filter lists used by uBlock Origin, says it will stop fixing ad-blocking issues on Facebook. They say Facebook keeps finding ways around new fixes, making the work increasingly difficult to sustain.
This won’t affect AdGuard’s Facebook filters. We maintain our own rules and will continue updating them.
There’s nothing to celebrate here. It shows how hard it is for small, often volunteer-run teams to keep up with tech giants — and how important their work is for everyone who wants more control over what they see online. | 1 884 |
