SATURDAY, 29 JUNE TEXT: ROMANS 6:15-23 TOPIC: WHO RULES YOUR LIFE? ROMANS 6:15-23 NIV 15:What then? Shall we sin because we are not under the law but under grace? By no means! 16:Don’t you know that when you offer yourselves to someone as obedient slaves, you are slaves of the one you obey—whether you are slaves to sin, which leads to death, or to obedience, which leads to righteousness? 17:But thanks be to God that, though you used to be slaves to sin, you have come to obey from your heart the pattern of teaching that has now claimed your allegiance. 18:You have been set free from sin and have become slaves to righteousness. 19:I am using an example from everyday life because of your human limitations. Just as you used to offer yourselves as slaves to impurity and to ever-increasing wickedness, so now offer yourselves as slaves to righteousness leading to holiness. 20:When you were slaves to sin, you were free from the control of righteousness. 21:What benefit did you reap at that time from the things you are now ashamed of? Those things result in death! 22:But now that you have been set free from sin and have become slaves of God, the benefit you reap leads to holiness, and the result is eternal life. 23:For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. WHO RULES YOUR LIFE? Someone might misunderstand the place of grace in the life of the believer and conclude that since we do not have anything to contribute to our salvation, it will be normal to continue in sin. So Paul declared that, that is not correct at all. He used the analogy of the slave-master relationship, a concept they understood better than the 21st Century believer, to make this point. The idea is that since we have now accepted Jesus Christ as Our Saviour, it is only appropriate that we surrender to His instructions as a slave does to his or her master because believers "have been set free from sin and have become slaves to righteousness" (vs 18). The life each of us lives depicts who rules and controls our lives. It's sad to see the lives of members of the church who claim to be followers of Christ being controlled by sin and rebellion against God. QUESTION: Does your life corroborate the faith you profess in Christ? PRAYER: Spend time in more prayers and allow your response to the above question guide what you say to God. FRIDAY, 28 JUNE TEXT: JONAH 4:1-11 TOPIC: GOD'S WILL DOES NOT DEPEND ON YOU JONAH 4:1-11 NIV 1:But to Jonah this seemed very wrong, and he became angry. 2:He prayed to the Lord, “Isn’t this what I said, Lord, when I was still at home? That is what I tried to forestall by fleeing to Tarshish. I knew that you are a gracious and compassionate God, slow to anger and abounding in love, a God who relents from sending calamity. 3:Now, Lord, take away my life, for it is better for me to die than to live.” 4:But the Lord replied, “Is it right for you to be angry?” 5:Jonah had gone out and sat down at a place east of the city. There he made himself a shelter, sat in its shade and waited to see what would happen to the city. 6:Then the Lord God provided a leafy plant and made it grow up over Jonah to give shade for his head to ease his discomfort, and Jonah was very happy about the plant. 7:But at dawn the next day God provided a worm, which chewed the plant so that it withered. 8:When the sun rose, God provided a scorching east wind, and the sun blazed on Jonah’s head so that he grew faint. He wanted to die, and said, “It would be better for me to die than to live.” 9:But God said to Jonah, “Is it right for you to be angry about the plant?” “It is,” he said. “And I’m so angry I wish I were dead.” 10:But the Lord said, “You have been concerned about this plant, though you did not tend it or make it grow. It sprang up overnight and died overnight. 11:And should I not have concern for the great city of Nineveh, in which there are more than a hundred and twenty thousand people who cannot tell their right hand from their left—and also many animals?” GOD'S WILL DOES NOT DEPEND ON YOU The drama gets more interesting as Jonah challenges God's determination to save a repentant nation! He expressed his anger in verses 1-2 which showed that his disobedience was due to the fact that God had used him against his wish. The good news about life is that there is a God who rules over the entire universe and all that happens therein is the expression of His will and is for His glory. This is a lesson Jonah had to learn the hard way. The same Jonah who accused God of injustice was now angry with God because He allowed a plant that shielded him from the scorching sun to wilt and dry! Many church members today will gladly query God for granting our supposed enemies the opportunity to repent and obtain forgiveness and salvation. Always seek to follow the will of God. QUESTION: As a Christian, what should be done to the terrorists ravaging communities across Nigeria, especially as they affect you directly? PRAYERS: Allow your response to the question above to guide your prayers this day. Food for the Day - 2024

THURSDAY, 27 JUNE TEXT: JONAH 3:1-10 TOPIC: GOD'S WILL MUST BE DONE JONAH 3:1-10 NIV 1:Then the word of the Lord came to Jonah a second time: 2:“Go to the great city of Nineveh and proclaim to it the message I give you.” 3:Jonah obeyed the word of the Lord and went to Nineveh. Now Nineveh was a very large city; it took three days to go through it. 4:Jonah began by going a day’s journey into the city, proclaiming, “Forty more days and Nineveh will be overthrown.” 5:The Ninevites believed God. A fast was proclaimed, and all of them, from the greatest to the least, put on sackcloth. 6:When Jonah’s warning reached the king of Nineveh, he rose from his throne, took off his royal robes, covered himself with sackcloth and sat down in the dust. 7:This is the proclamation he issued in Nineveh: “By the decree of the king and his nobles: Do not let people or animals, herds or flocks, taste anything; do not let them eat or drink. 8:But let people and animals be covered with sackcloth. Let everyone call urgently on God. Let them give up their evil ways and their violence. 9:Who knows? God may yet relent and with compassion turn from his fierce anger so that we will not perish.” 10:When God saw what they did and how they turned from their evil ways, he relented and did not bring on them the destruction he had threatened. GOD'S WILL MUST BE DONE Finally, Jonah obeyed God. It is interesting to see the zeal with which Jonah moved from one end of the town to the other. This was a large city that would ordinarily take three whole days to cover on foot. That should be expected considering his encounter with God at sea and in the belly of the fish. The Ninevites surprised Jonah by their swift and total repentance as contained in verses 5 - 6. The king followed his own repentance with a royal edict which contained a most extraordinary demand (see verses 7 - 8). This is a great challenge to us in this generation of cosmetic repentance that is very common among many church members and leaders. QUESTION: Does your life demonstrate your claim to repentance? PRAYER: I ask You, dear Lord for strength and grace to live according to the confessions of my mouth, in Jesus name. Amen. Food for the Day - 2024

WEDNESDAY, 26 JUNE TEXT: JONAH 2:1-10 TOPIC: TOUGH LOVE FROM GOD JONAH 2:1-10 NIV 1:From inside the fish Jonah prayed to the Lord his God. 2:He said: “In my distress I called to the Lord, and he answered me. From deep in the realm of the dead I called for help, and you listened to my cry. 3:You hurled me into the depths, into the very heart of the seas, and the currents swirled about me; all your waves and breakers swept over me. 4:I said, ‘I have been banished from your sight; yet I will look again toward your holy temple.’ 5:The engulfing waters threatened me, the deep surrounded me; seaweed was wrapped around my head. 6:To the roots of the mountains I sank down; the earth beneath barred me in forever. But you, Lord my God, brought my life up from the pit. 7:“When my life was ebbing away, I remembered you, Lord, and my prayer rose to you, to your holy temple. 8:“Those who cling to worthless idols turn away from God’s love for them. 9:But I, with shouts of grateful praise, will sacrifice to you. What I have vowed I will make good. I will say, ‘Salvation comes from the Lord.’” 10:And the Lord commanded the fish, and it vomited Jonah onto dry land. TOUGH LOVE FROM GOD Some of our suffering and pain are caused by our choices which are sometimes wrong and sinful. There are times when God unleashes suffering to teach us a lesson or bring us back to His purpose for us. This is part of the love that God has for us, hence the expression "Love must be tough!" As Jonah was conscious in the belly of the fish, he could explain how it felt to be in there. God's intention in showing us His tough love is to bring us to repentance. The next time you find yourself in a tough and painful situation, stop and look up to God to enable you understand what He is saying and where He is leading you. QUESTION: What was your reaction the last time you found yourself in a very difficult and painful situation? PRAYER: Help me, O Lord, to always listen to what You are saying to me in my moments of pain and despair, in Jesus name. Amen. Food for the Day - 2024

TUESDAY, 25 JUNE TEXT: JONAH 1:1-17 TOPIC: WE ARE TOOLS IN THE HAND OF THE LORD JONAH 1:1-17 NIV 1:The word of the Lord came to Jonah son of Amittai: 2:“Go to the great city of Nineveh and preach against it, because its wickedness has come up before me.” 3:But Jonah ran away from the Lord and headed for Tarshish. He went down to Joppa, where he found a ship bound for that port. After paying the fare, he went aboard and sailed for Tarshish to flee from the Lord. 4:Then the Lord sent a great wind on the sea, and such a violent storm arose that the ship threatened to break up. 5:All the sailors were afraid and each cried out to his own god. And they threw the cargo into the sea to lighten the ship. But Jonah had gone below deck, where he lay down and fell into a deep sleep. 6:The captain went to him and said, “How can you sleep? Get up and call on your god! Maybe he will take notice of us so that we will not perish.” 7:Then the sailors said to each other, “Come, let us cast lots to find out who is responsible for this calamity.” They cast lots and the lot fell on Jonah. 8:So they asked him, “Tell us, who is responsible for making all this trouble for us? What kind of work do you do? Where do you come from? What is your country? From what people are you?” 9:He answered, “I am a Hebrew and I worship the Lord, the God of heaven, who made the sea and the dry land.” 10:This terrified them and they asked, “What have you done?” (They knew he was running away from the Lord, because he had already told them so.) 11:The sea was getting rougher and rougher. So they asked him, “What should we do to you to make the sea calm down for us?” 12:“Pick me up and throw me into the sea,” he replied, “and it will become calm. I know that it is my fault that this great storm has come upon you.” 13:Instead, the men did their best to row back to land. But they could not, for the sea grew even wilder than before. 14:Then they cried out to the Lord, “Please, Lord, do not let us die for taking this man’s life. Do not hold us accountable for killing an innocent man, for you, Lord, have done as you pleased.” 15:Then they took Jonah and threw him overboard, and the raging sea grew calm. 16:At this the men greatly feared the Lord, and they offered a sacrifice to the Lord and made vows to him. 17:Now the Lord provided a huge fish to swallow Jonah, and Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights. WE ARE TOOLS IN THE HAND OF THE LORD Jonah was instructed to proceed to Nineveh and preach the message of God but he thought they did not deserve it because he knew that God is compassionate and forgives the wicked sinner who dares to repent and seek His face, Jonah disobeyed God. He chose to go in the opposite direction by sailing towards Tarshish to escape from God. But he forgot that the God of Israel is everywhere and that no human being can escape from His presence. The purpose of the great wind was to isolate Jonah and demonstrate to him that God must use him to accomplish His purpose for Nineveh. There are still people like Jonah today who feel that they know more and better than God. But God will always use anyone He chooses to accomplish His purpose and nothing can stop that from happening. QUESTION: What type of tool are you and in whose hand? PRAYER: Teach and empower me, dear Lord, never to resist You in whatever way You have planned to use me, in Jesus name. Amen. SUNDAY, 23 JUNE TEXT: 2 JOHN 1-13 TOPIC: TRUE MARKS OF A BELIEVER 2 JOHN 1-13 NIV 1:The elder, To the lady chosen by God and to her children, whom I love in the truth—and not I only, but also all who know the truth— 2:because of the truth, which lives in us and will be with us forever: 3:Grace, mercy and peace from God the Father and from Jesus Christ, the Father’s Son, will be with us in truth and love. 4:It has given me great joy to find some of your children walking in the truth, just as the Father commanded us. 5:And now, dear lady, I am not writing you a new command but one we have had from the beginning. I ask that we love one another. 6:And this is love: that we walk in obedience to his commands. As you have heard from the beginning, his command is that you walk in love. 7:I say this because many deceivers, who do not acknowledge Jesus Christ as coming in the flesh, have gone out into the world. Any such person is the deceiver and the antichrist. 8:Watch out that you do not lose what we have worked for, but that you may be rewarded fully. 9:Anyone who runs ahead and does not continue in the teaching of Christ does not have God; whoever continues in the teaching has both the Father and the Son. 10:If anyone comes to you and does not bring this teaching, do not take them into your house or welcome them. 11:Anyone who welcomes them shares in their wicked work. 12:I have much to write to you, but I do not want to use paper and ink. Instead, I hope to visit you and talk with you face to face, so that our joy may be complete. 13:The children of your sister, who is chosen by God, send their greetings. TRUE MARKS OF A BELIEVER A true believer is identified by the truth and love he or she teaches and shows to both believers and unbelievers. It has been established that there was a time when, once a believer attests to something, no second witness was required. But it is no more like that today, especially in Africa. That is why the quality of Christianity we see in Africa doesn't bring godliness to governance, marketplaces, communities, the streets, etc. John's message from verses 4-6 is an indictment on the church in Africa. This challenges us to return to the same truth the Father commanded through the apostles and sends out even today through the faithful men and women He has called to serve. This is the solution to the internal rivalries and conflicts we find in churches and across denominations. We must return to walking in the truth as enshrined in the Holy Scriptures and demonstrate this in our love for one another. QUESTION: Is your life characterized by the truth of the Word of God? PRAYER: I rededicate my life to feeding daily on the truth of the Word of God, in Jesus name. Amen. Food for the Day - 2024

SATURDAY, 22 JUNE TEXT: I JOHN 5:13-21 TOPIC: JOHN ASSURES ALL BELIEVERS I JOHN 5:13-21 NIV 13:I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God so that you may know that you have eternal life. 14:This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us. 15:And if we know that he hears us—whatever we ask—we know that we have what we asked of him. 16:If you see any brother or sister commit a sin that does not lead to death, you should pray and God will give them life. I refer to those whose sin does not lead to death. There is a sin that leads to death. I am not saying that you should pray about that. 17:All wrongdoing is sin, and there is sin that does not lead to death. 18:We know that anyone born of God does not continue to sin; the One who was born of God keeps them safe, and the evil one cannot harm them. 19:We know that we are children of God, and that the whole world is under the control of the evil one. 20:We know also that the Son of God has come and has given us understanding, so that we may know him who is true. And we are in him who is true by being in his Son Jesus Christ. He is the true God and eternal life. 21:Dear children, keep yourselves from idols. JOHN ASSURES ALL BELIEVERS John assures us that whoever believes in Jesus Christ as the Son of God can be certain of his or her salvation. The human mind finds it difficult to accept the truth that Jesus' death serves as the atoning sacrifice for our sins and that by faith in Him, we are justified. On the strength of this truth, he encourages us to pray because God will always hear His children who pray to Him according to His will. When you ask sometimes you do not receive because you ask with the wrong motives. This call to ask for anything according to the will of God includes praying for the salvation of unbelievers. John defines some of them as committing a sin unto death! This is difficult to interpret but we know that there are people who deliberately choose to reject the Gospel to the extent that their conscience becomes so dead that they feel comfortable with evil and uncomfortable with godliness. Nevertheless, we have God's promise that we should pray according to His will and allow Him to handle the rest. QUESTION: Are you confident that you are a child of God because you have accepted Jesus Christ as your Lord and Saviour? PRAYER: Thank You, Jesus for the assurance of my position in You and for making me a child of God, in Jesus name. Amen. Food for the Day - 2024

FRIDAY, 21 JUNE TEXT: I JOHN 5:1-12* TOPIC: THE TESTIMONY OF GOD I JOHN 5:1-12 NIV 1:Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ is born of God, and everyone who loves the father loves his child as well. 2:This is how we know that we love the children of God: by loving God and carrying out his commands. 3:In fact, this is love for God: to keep his commands. And his commands are not burdensome, 4:for everyone born of God overcomes the world. This is the victory that has overcome the world, even our faith. 5:Who is it that overcomes the world? Only the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God. 6:This is the one who came by water and blood—Jesus Christ. He did not come by water only, but by water and blood. And it is the Spirit who testifies, because the Spirit is the truth. 7:For there are three that testify: 8:the Spirit, the water and the blood; and the three are in agreement. 9:We accept human testimony, but God’s testimony is greater because it is the testimony of God, which he has given about his Son. 10:Whoever believes in the Son of God accepts this testimony. Whoever does not believe God has made him out to be a liar, because they have not believed the testimony God has given about his Son. 11:And this is the testimony: God has given us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. 12:Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life. THE TESTIMONY OF GOD A true testimony is meant to authenticate and affirm a true event or statement regarding someone or about something that has happened. Today's text presents the testimony of God in verses 11 and 12 which also demands that only those who believe that Jesus is the Christ are born of God. And as His children, we should demonstrate our relationship through a deliberate submission to obey our Father's commands and instructions. This enables us to overcome the world with all of its attractive temptations. John added that God's testimony concerning Jesus Christ is displayed through the Spirit, the water and the blood. Indeed, Jesus is the Messiah and Redeemer of those who accept Him as Lord and Saviour. Praise God for the true testimony concerning Jesus as the Christ is with us to share. QUESTION: Are you holding to the testimony of men or God regarding Jesus Christ? PRAYER: We praise God for the true testimony at our disposal that Jesus is the Christ and Son of the living God who offered Himself as our atoning sacrifice, in Jesus name. Amen. Food for the Day - 2024

THURSDAY, 20 JUNE TEXT: I JOHN 4:7-2 TOPIC: GOD'S LOVE FOR US I JOHN 4:7-21 NIV 7:Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God. 8:Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love. 9:This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him. 10:This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins. 11:Dear friends, since God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. 12:No one has ever seen God; but if we love one another, God lives in us and his love is made complete in us. 13:This is how we know that we live in him and he in us: He has given us of his Spirit. 14:And we have seen and testify that the Father has sent his Son to be the Savior of the world. 15:If anyone acknowledges that Jesus is the Son of God, God lives in them and they in God. 16:And so we know and rely on the love God has for us. God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in them. 17:This is how love is made complete among us so that we will have confidence on the day of judgment: In this world we are like Jesus. 18:There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love. 19:We love because he first loved us. 20:Whoever claims to love God yet hates a brother or sister is a liar. For whoever does not love their brother and sister, whom they have seen, cannot love God, whom they have not seen. 21:And he has given us this command: Anyone who loves God must also love their brother and sister. GOD'S LOVE FOR US John is often referred to as the apostle of love because, from his gospel to the three epistles, he dwelled so much on the love of God. This also shows that God's love for all of us never ceased to amaze John. It is not uncommon for a follower of Christ to always emphasize one aspect of His life that impacted him or her the most. John walked so close to Jesus to the extent that we read that he leaned upon Jesus by the side which showed very close intimacy. John charged believers to love one another because love comes from God. So, to love genuinely is a clear indication that you are a child of God born of the Spirit of God through faith in Jesus Christ. Remember that if God is love and this same love lives inside us believers, then when we express this same love to both believers and unbelievers, they will have a glimpse of the invisible God. So, dear friends, "whoever loves God must also love his brother" (vs 21). QUESTION: Are there brethren in your life today whom you cannot love, let alone forgive? PRAYER: Kindly allow your response to the above question guide your prayers. Food for the Day - 2024

WEDNESDAY, 19 JUNE TEXT: I JOHN 4:1-6 TOPIC: TRUE PASTORS VERSUS FALSE PROPHETS I JOHN 4:1-6 NIV 1:Dear friends, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world. 2:This is how you can recognize the Spirit of God: Every spirit that acknowledges that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God, 3:but every spirit that does not acknowledge Jesus is not from God. This is the spirit of the antichrist, which you have heard is coming and even now is already in the world. 4:You, dear children, are from God and have overcome them, because the one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world. 5:They are from the world and therefore speak from the viewpoint of the world, and the world listens to them. 6:We are from God, and whoever knows God listens to us; but whoever is not from God does not listen to us. This is how we recognize the Spirit of truth and the spirit of falsehood. TRUE PASTORS VERSUS FALSE PROPHETS There are thousands of groups, movements and organizations that claim to be part of the body of Christ - the Church Universal. Each is led by a leader or group of leaders who lay claim to have been called by God to represent Him as the carriers of the gospel of Jesus Christ. But these so-called 'men of God' deny the same Jesus they preach either through their self-made gospels or self-indulging lives of impurity, compromise and ungodliness. So, John gave the secret of how to discover these false prophets in verse 3. These false pastors, evangelist and miracle workers use the wisdom and style of the world to operate and many of the people in the church today prefer to listen to them and flock to their 'churches' in droves. But we are counselled to follow the teachings of the true Word of God, most especially because we have the Spirit of God living in us. QUESTION: What is the difference between a false prophet and a true pastor? PRAYER: Thank You, dear Lord, for giving us the signs with which to distinguish a false prophet from the true one. Give us the courage to resist and expose them and help other vulnerable members to flee from them, in Jesus name. Amen. Food for the Day - 2024
