“China firmly supports Pakistan in safeguarding its independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity.”
This sentence is not a routine boilerplate language between ‘all weather allies’. It shows that China will actively coordinate with and strengthen Pakistan’s military capabilities to counterbalance India and keep India tied down in South Asia. Even though Pakistan is desperately currying favour with the USA, the Chinese will continue to dominate and use it for larger geopolitical goals. One must hence be clear-eyed. There are strategic limits to any ‘reset’ or rapprochement between China and India.
The armed conflicts in Iran and Ukraine have brought asymmetric wars back into limelight and hold lessons for India as it tries to deal with China and Pakistan. At a time when the United Arab Emirates (UAE) is facing unprecedented attacks and threats, India is proving to be a reliable and confidence-boosting strategic partner. But Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s bet on expanding energy and defence ties with the UAE, and his continued push to deepen relations with Israel, do not mean India is joining any bloc against Saudi Arabia or Iran. The cardinal principle of multi-alignment continues to guide India’s policy in West Asia/Middle East. Please read Professor Sreeram Chaulia’s column in Hindustan Times and share your thoughts.
