Passage ➖3 The real ornament of woman is her character, her purity. Metal and stones can never be real ornaments. The names of women like Sita and Damayanti have become sacred to us for their unsullied virtue, never for their jewellery, if they wore any. My asking from you, your jewellery has also a wider significance. Several sisters have told me that they feel all the better for getting rid of their jewels. I have called this an act of merit in more ways than one. No man or woman is entitled to the possession of wealth, unless he or she has given a fair share of it to the poor and the helpless. It is a social and religious obligation and has been called a sacrifice by the Bhagavad Gita. He who does not offer this sacrifice has been called a thief. The Gita has enumerated many forms of sacrifice, but what greater sacrifice can there be than to serve the poor and the needy? For us, today, there can be no sacrifice higher than to forget the distinctions of high and low and to realize the equality of all men. I also wish to bring home to the women of India that real ornamentation lies not in loading the body with metal and stone, but in purifying the heart and developing the beauty of soul.(a) What is the real ornament of 'woman'? Ans. The real ornament of women is her character, her purity. Metal, stones jewellery cannot ordain a woman's virtue and sanctity truly. To serve the poor and the needy and to forget the distinctions of high and low is an act of greater sacrifice. So give up, destroy, permit injury or forgo for the sake of something having a more pressing claim can be termed as on act of higher sacrifice. (d) Where does the real ornamentation lie? Ans. The real ornamentation does not lie in loading the body with precious metals and stones (Jewellery) but in purifying the heart and developing the beauty of soul. (e) (i) Which word, in the passage, means 'spotless'? Ans. The word 'unsullied' carries the same meaning as 'spotless'. (ii) Which word, in the passage, is the opposite of 'insignificance'? Ans. The word 'significance' mentioned in the passage, is opposite of word 'insignificance'. (iii) What does the phrase 'getting rid of' mean in the passage? Ans. The relation between hunger and humans is by birth. A man comes in this world along with his hunger. Hunger is a testimony of any person being alive. But when this hunger takes the form of lust then it becomes cause of concern somebody's extreme greed starts becoming a cause of problem of another person. Hunger and starvation are the signals of equality.
↑↑↑My Mother at Sixty-six↑↑↑ Ans~ The central idea of the poem– “My mother at sixty six” composed by Kamala Das shows the fear of losing her mother of the poetess. Her mother is in the last phase of her life. So the poetess feels that she will pass away soon. Poetess gets scared of this thought. To come out of this negative thought, she looked outside of her car. The world outside was full of life and activity. The young trees seemed running fast. Children looked very happy. Unseen passage day→2
If we want success in any undertaking, we must work steadily to the end. No undertaking is attained without difficulties. Sheridan, a famous orator of England, attempted to make a speech in the Parliament but failed and sat down in great discomfiture. His friend told him that he could not be an orator. He replied, "It is in me and shall come out," and he afterwards succeeded in becoming a persuasive orator of his day. The late Earl of Beaconsfield also broke down in the midst of his maiden speech in the House of Commons. He sat down in the midst of hisses but he told the audience with some emotion. "I have several times begun many things and often succeeded at last. I shall sit down now, but the time will come, when you will hear me." These words
afterwards proved to be prophetic. We should not,
therefore, be discouraged by disappointment at the
beginning of life.
