Tonight, after a judge dropped the murder charges against the police officer who killed Eddie Irizarry, people in Philadelphia engaged in multiple forms of protest, including looting corporate stores like Apple and Foot Locker.
This is a rational protest tactic in a society in which police murder hundreds of young people of color with impunity every year, in which millions are forced to scrape by in poverty while billionaires flaunt their wealth.
In the words of one witness of tonight's protests in Philadelphia, "Everybody must eat."
As thousands of refugees pour into Armenia from Nagorno-Karabakh, we've added the perspective of another anarchist in Yerevan to our coverage of the situation.
https://crimethinc.com/ArmeniaAnalysis2023
In this analysis, the author argues that within Armenia, the ongoing Nagorno-Karabakh crisis has been used to quell dissent and discourage criticism of Armenian nationalism. Politicians on both sides of the conflict have used the threat of war to consolidate their power and fatten their wallets. Now, despite having been partly responsible for creating this tragedy, the political opposition in Armenia is using Azerbaijan's seizure of the region opportunistically.
There is no nationalist solution to oppression or war.

This week, a new round of violence broke out over the contested zone of Nagorno-Karabakh, an Armenian enclave in Azerbaijan.
As economic and ecological crises intensify, governments are seeking to distract attention from their domestic problems by escalating ethnic strife and military conflict.
To illuminate the situation, we present an excerpt from an anti-war statement from Azerbaijan and two texts from anarchists in Armenia.
https://crimethinc.com/Artsakh
The situation of refugees in Armenia is even more pressing this week, as Azerbaijan resumed military attacks on Nagorno-Karabakh, where tens of thousands of Armenians have been holding out despite decades of interethnic violence.
As Russia loses control over the region and other governments feel emboldened to embark on conquests of their own, war is spreading, displacing more people.
It's important to visualize the possibility of success in advance, in order to be prepared to take advantage of it.
The first time a tactic is employed, if it fails, it is often because those employing it do not take it far enough. After that, when a tactic fails, it is usually because those employing it have lost the element of surprise.
We should always prepare for the best-case scenario as well as the worst. Sometimes we only get one chance.

Solidarity among the Displaced: How Russian anarchists in exile supported Armenian refugee squatters
https://crimethinc.com/Armenia2023
Throughout the world, mass displacement is accelerating as climate catastrophe, economic crisis, and war drive millions into exile, both within their own countries and across borders. These mass migrations are exacerbating gentrification, driving up housing costs just as real estate speculation is rendering more and more people homeless. How can displaced people continue to take political action in their new homes, establishing solidarity across ethnic lines in unfamiliar settings?
In Armenia, Russian anarchists living in exile set one example, supporting Armenian refugees who had squatted the abandoned Ministry of Defense.
Coming out of the Occupy movement, we initiated a dialogue with anarchists who had participated in similar assembly-based movements in Spain, Greece, Bosnia, Slovenia, Brazil, and elsewhere.
Our goal was to identify the ways that the decision-making processes we employed had facilitated or impeded social change, and to formulate an anarchist analysis of democratic discourse and models.
The result was our book, From Democracy to Freedom.

Occupy Wall Street got off the ground 12 years ago today.
The initial idea was pretty silly—to occupy Zuccotti Park and reach consensus on a single demand, with the also naïve idea that President Barack Obama would somehow be forced to grant it.
Instead, owing to the financial crisis, as soon as a puncture opened in business as usual, tens of thousands of people poured into it, bringing a wide range of different concerns and tactics. The most combative Occupy encampments set the baseline for the protests against murderous police that broke out in 2014, setting precedents for the uprising of 2020.
You can read about some of the tensions that unfolded within the Occupy movement here:

Shall be constrained to honor us though dead!"

If the FBI Approaches You to Become an Informant
An FAQ: What You Need to Know
https://crimethinc.com/InformantFAQ
It's never a bad time to educate yourself about what you need to know if police or FBI agents pressure you to provide them information.
"Federal agents approach you. Perhaps they just ask a couple offhand questions; perhaps they have a deal to propose. They might tell you they are trying to help you; they might tell you that you are in a lot of trouble and it will just get worse unless you cooperate with them; they might tell you that they need your help to prevent something terrible from happening. But whatever they say, you can’t be sure what their real agenda is or what they’re trying to learn. Whether you’ve already been approached for interrogation or you simply want to be prepared for the possibility, this FAQ answers all the questions you might have."

One year ago today, the Iranian Guidance Patrol police arrested Jina Mahsa Amini. Allegedly, she was not wearing the hijab in accordance with Iranian state policy. After Jina died at their hands, people across Iran took to the streets, confronting the police and opening up spaces of ungovernable freedom.

Today, our thoughts are with those who were killed or imprisoned as a consequence of that uprising, and with all who continue to fight today—in Iran and all around the world. Let's make a world without patriarchal violence. 🏴
