π¨ THE VIX ISN'T TELLING YOU THE WHOLE STORY
π VIX just printed 14.
Lowest reading of 2026. Markets look dead calm.
π But contracts expiring 26 to 29 August are pricing a premium over every other date on the board. That premium never shows up on the VIX, because the VIX is one number averaged across the whole market. It only shows up once you check date by date.
ποΈ That window isn't random
Nvidia earnings drop 26 August, and the Fed's Jackson Hole symposium runs 27 to 29 August with Fed chair Kevin Warsh's first keynote in the role. Two of the market's biggest catalysts, 72 hours apart.
π§ This is the gap between IV and term structure.
IV tells you how nervous the market is right now. Term structure tells you WHEN. Line up every expiry's IV side by side and the dates carrying real event risk spike off the chart on their own.
π The filter
Next time "everything looks calm," check whether specific dates are pricing extra premium. If they are, someone bigger than you already expects that date to move, and they're already paying up for it.
That premium is often the earliest tell of where institutions are quietly positioning ahead of a catalyst, before retail notices. That's the blindspot we're unpacking live at Tribe.
