09 One of our nanny goats had twins the other day. mom got lethargic and we didnt' know why. We called our local mobile vet clinic and they gave us the run around saying they could be out friday. My wife spent the day on the phone getting run around... even told to call the NC school of vets (we in SC!!!). So one of the neighbors came over... she thinks the goat was bloated, i'm not sure she wasn't going septic as to me he breath felt hot when I hand fed her.
Never the less, she didn't make it and we found two kids snuggled up to dead mom this morning. We have two other nannies but their milk hasn't dropped yet and they won't let those kids anywhere near them. So we are bottle feeding two kids in the house. | 1 381 | 3 | Loading... |

14 Simplified code today for managing the EV charger we have that can charge the car directly from my solar system. Setup such that when house battery is over 92%, the car starts charging. If we begin pulling a little power (ie 200w) from my house battery, then I ratchet the allowable charge power for the car down 500w. If I'm putting more than 400w into the house battery, then I increase the allowable car charge power up 250w. If there's a sudden load change or sudden loss of solar and the battery power spikes to -2kw, I cut the charge current by 1/2. The one limbo state is that the minimum current the car can pull is 6amps per the charging spec... so it's possible the car could be pulling 1440w from the battery until it gets to 90% and then I have a deadman's switch that absolutely will not allow the car to charge if the house is <90%.
The saving grace in all of this is that my inverters are tanks and can run at 50% overload for about 30 minutes. | 1 633 | 4 | Loading... |

24 When connecting multiple batteries in parallel, there is a right way and a wrong way. You must take into account the resistance of the wires. With Lithium batteries having a resistance of 0.2milli ohms, a length of wire having 1 milliohm becomes significant. In this illustration, the battery on the right has no additional resistance and charges and discharges first. The battery on the left has the resistance of 3 wire jumpers and doesn't discharge as much as the others.

28 Lesson learned here.... I have a rain water collection system off the barn to store in 4 IBC totes for watering the livestock. We've got float valves in the troughs so they stay full. Someone left a hose turned on and drained the 1000 gallons of rain water. Then it also siphoned out the horse and goat troughs. You see once a float valve opens it will let water out too. You can't use a check valve on them because the gravity fed system doesn't have enough pressure to overcome the spring.
So the solution will be to connect a small 1/4" poly hose to the outlet of each float valve in the troughs and have that hose go to the top of the water level. That way if the gravity feed system runs dry again, it won't suck all the troughs dry. | 1 836 | 12 | Loading... |

31 I put a great deal of effort into telling y’all that solar works. Let me run this by ya…. If you buy solar for “no money down” they give you an 18 month loan for the government tax rebate that you gotta pay off on time or there’s a hefty interest rate. And then they give you a 20 year loan for the balance of the cost of your system with a lien on your house.
There may be a better way… I am not a financial advisor…. Can you borrow against your own 401k? Then you pay yourself back with interest. The solar companies will do the job cheaper because they don’t have to bake in the price of those loans.

34 Slightly off topic, but the public schools are imploding. The big picture... Discipline problems have existed since integration in the 60's. My ex is a school teacher and she saw a memo from teh school superintendant to the principal of her high school saying there were too many black kids expelled and to stop suspending them for discipline infractions. (Side note... suspended 3x in a year is automatic expulsion). So the schools became more dangerous. Next came magnet schools. A game to place talented and gifted kids at the same street address as a problem school to raise the test scores. No child left behind has lead to nearly 1/3 of the kids in schools in IEP (individual education plans)... you see NCLB holds the schools accountable for students' lack of progress unless they have a learning disability. Poof, all the slower kids are now "learning disabled". Further, when the class slows for the slow kids, the smart kids get bored. 7 year old bored boys are put on ADD drugs because the teacher says he is disrupting the class.
Now to the point I want to make... South Carolina just allocated funds to college students who pursue a career in education. There's a teacher shortage don'cha'know! So the solution is always to say teachers need to make more money or we need to pay people to become teachers. The solution is never ever "wipe the decks clear of bad students".
Want to fixed public education? work on disicpline so the teachers can teach.
How do you get there? allow parents to divert tax money that would have been used for the public schools to private schools or as a tax rebate for home schooling. I have no doubt that the private schools would jack up their tuition... yes, but the public schools would be left with nothing but the worst of the worst and no money.
