| 13 | Topic: setfacl command in Linux
We already have covered
✅ CHMOD - https://t.me/c/1480784123/2223/2483
✅ CHOWN - https://t.me/c/1480784123/2223/2476
✅ CHATTR - https://t.me/c/1480784123/2223/2476
📚 Now lets talk about: setfacl
The setfacl command in Linux is used to set Access Control Lists (ACLs) on files and directories, allowing more fine-grained permission control than the traditional chmod command. Below is a detailed list of commonly used setfacl command options and examples:
✅ Basic Syntax:
setfacl [OPTION]... [ACL]... FILE...
✅ Types of ACL Entries:
u:user – User-specific ACL
g:group – Group-specific ACL
o – Others
m – Mask (maximum effective permissions)
d – Default (for directories)
Common setfacl OPTIONS:
-m Modify ACL (add or update a permission)
-x Remove an ACL entry
-b Remove all ACL entries (clear ACL)
-k Remove default ACLs only
-d Apply a default ACL (for directories)
--set -Set ACLs from scratch (replaces all current entries)
--mask -Recalculate the effective rights mask
--remove-all -Same as b; remove all extended ACL entries
--remove-default -Same as -k; remove only default ACLS
--test -Parse and display the result of an ACL modification, but do not apply it
Examples:
✨ 1. Give read/write access to user alice
setfacl -m u:alice:rw file.txt
✨ 2. Give read-only access to group devs
setfacl -m g:devs:r file.txt
✨ 3. Remove ACL entry for user alice
setfacl -x u:alice file.txt
✨ 4. Set default ACL for user bob on a directory
setfacl -d -m u:bob:rw mydir/
✨ 5. Remove all ACLs
setfacl -b file.txt
✨ 6. Set all ACLs from scratch (replace existing)
setfacl --set u::rw-,g::r--,o::--- file.txt
✨ 7. Apply ACLs recursively
setfacl -R -m u:john:rwX /project

| 17 | ⚡ Understanding Fork Bombs
⚡ A Denial-of-Service Primer
⚡ Today we explore fork bombs, a type of denial-of-service (DoS) attack targeting both Unix-like and Windows systems
🦴 WARNING: Do not run these examples on your machine. They can cause serious system instability by overwhelming your CPU and exhausting available processes.
✅ CODE 1: Linux (Bash Script)
:(){ :|:& };:
📚 Explanation:
👉 :() — Defines a function named :
👉 { :|:& }; — The function calls 👉 itself twice, recursively, in the background
👉 : — Invokes the function
✅ CODE 2: Windows (.bat Script)
%0|%0
Explanation:
👉 %0 refers to the current script
👉 %0|%0 causes the script to 👉 spawn two new instances of itself
😢 Why is this dangerous?
These scripts launch exponentially growing processes, eventually consuming all system resources. This can freeze or crash your machine — effectively making it unusable without a hard reboot.
😴 Stay safe. Use your knowledge responsibly.
