Hans Gross (1847â1915)
Hans Gross was an Austrian criminal jurist who, for part of his life, was an âexamining magistrate,â meaning that he was responsible for carrying out investigations in criminal cases. Among other things the examining magistrate was responsible for requesting forensic testing in a case. Gross was not a scientist himself, but he requested the scientific tests conducted on evidence, and this experience taught him to think like a forensic scientist. He wrote a major book in 1893 titled the Handbook for Examining Magistrates, as a System of Criminalistics. It is from this book that the word criminalistics came. Gross recognized that a scientific and systematic approach to criminal investigation and evidence testing was vital to a good and just case outcome. Many forensic scientists attribute the birth of modern criminalistics to the book. During his life Gross was a professor at Chernivtsi University (in Ukraine), Prague University (in the Czech Republic), and finally at the University of Graz (in Austria). He wrote books in other disciplines, such as criminal psychology, during his lifetime as well.
