Phd on Making Methods (for designing in uncertain times)
Eindhoven University of Technology, Netherlands🇳🇱
This project takes place at the department of Industrial Design and aims to advance our understanding of method and process as strategies for paying attention and evidencing difficult and uncertain material. This is done through material speculative making the edges of digital craftsmanship, speculation-through-making and first person perspectives to generate samples, reflections, data, performances and timings, in order to arrive at understandings of how we engage with machines, material, patterns, people and more-than-human worlds1 .To do this we bring together situated knowledges2 , diffractions3 , and critical fabulations4 informed by feminist design research5 and the understanding of making as a feminist practice6 . The promise of these strategies is that they are design-oriented, longitudinal, and situated inquiries of research through design and digital craftsmanship. They serve as a strong basis for learning to negotiate complexity and trouble through design7 .Practically, this doctoral research project will develop a series of design research methods through hands-on experimentation that engage with how we can do design research with a complex world in rapid change. The project is strongly connected to the Wearable Senses Lab as a site for making and research, and a large aspect of the output is expected to be material explorations.

Doctoral fellow - Department of Political Sciences
Ghent University,Belgium🇧🇪
A long tradition of literature emphasizes that the stability of democracies rests upon its citizens. According to scholars like Easton (1975) and Norris (2011), citizens’ support for the political system and their commitment to democracy is vital for its functioning and endurance. Though citizens overwhelmingly support democracy as the most desirable form of governance (Wike et al. 2017; Wuttke et al. 2022), they are often willing to condone undemocratic acts as long as they stand to gain from them politically (Krishnarajan 2023). Citizens are, for instance, inclined to vote for undemocratic candidates that align with their partisan preferences (Graham & Svolik 2020), and they are willing to accept flawed democratic processes as long as they are on the winning side (Werner et al. 2023). Another crucial part of citizens’ democratic commitments is losers’ consent (i.e. the consent of those who did not achieve their desired outcome in a political process), which seems to be increasingly under pressure following events in, for instance, the US and Brazil.

The PhD candidate will be associated with the project “Associations of musculoskeletal pain disorders across the life course with health and function at old age: A population-based cohort study”, and the research group Aging, Health and Welfare . In this project, we will study the associations of chronic musculoskeletal disorders during midlife with impaired physical function and risk of falls after the age of 65 years. We will also study to what extent socioeconomic factors, gender, and medication use may affect the associations. The PhD candidate will get access to longitudinal data in the Tromsø Study , a large Norwegian population-based study with many measurement points. The data comprises detailed information about musculoskeletal disorders and background factors, as well as self-reported falls and clinical examinations of physical function at the 7th survey of the Tromsø Study (e.g., walking tests, strength tests, and balance tests). The PhD project is a collaboration effort between OsloMet and the Norwegian Institute of Public Health, and the PhD candidate will work closely with experienced researchers from these institutions.

PhD position on "On-Chip Separation of Proteins for Single-Cell Proteome Profiling"
ETH Zurich, Switzerland🇨🇭
⏰مهلت: unspecified
The focus of BMC group is developing technologies that enable single-cell studies down to single-molecule level. In our research, nanotechnology and biophysics meet to answer important biological questions. We're curious about things like how cells release proteins and how immune cells in our body fight against disease using their protein repertoire.
Our work has important applications, especially in understanding immune cells better and finding new ways to treat diseases using cells. Our research is focused on making sensors that can be used for monitoring process in living cells, and we're especially interested in using nanopore sensors for this purpose. These sensors help us see what's happening both inside and outside the cells. For example, we can observe how immune cells fight against cancer cells or how cells react to external physical or chemicals cues. We work closely with scientists from other disciplines such as biology and immunology, to implement our knowledge in emerging applications such as cell-based therapies to fight against cancer and other infectious diseases.

Establishing the potential for improved management of intermittent sewage discharges with nature-based solutions - PhD
Cranfield University, United Kingdom🇬🇧
Water infrastructure in the UK relies on combined conveyance of sewage, surface runoff, and pre-treated industrial wastewater. Emergency overflows divert excess flows to receiving water courses or attenuation facilities to prevent sewage backing up. Initially designed for intermittent discharges, these overflows now routinely operate due to population growth, increased paved areas, infrastructure ageing, and water ingress, with only 40% of SO spilling less than the target 10 spills per year in 2023. Climate change impacts will exacerbate this issue, as more periods of drought (where pollutants settle in the bottom of the pipes) followed by flash floods (high flows in paved areas that feed the sewers and push settled pollutants out of the pipes) are expected to be the norm. Negative public perception and regulatory response have led to targets for reducing overflow frequency, ecological harm, visual impacts, and protecting bathing water.
This PhD project has been co-developed with three water companies and the Environment Agency to address crucial gaps in knowledge needed to make nature-based solutions a central strategy for reducing occurrence and impact of SO spills. The objectives of the project include mapping land availability for nature-based solutions around SO; assessing expected SO contaminant loads; quantifying pollution, water volume attenuation and co-benefits provided by different nature-based solutions; and developing a prioritised portfolio of effective nature-based solutions for managing SO in selected catchments . This comprehensive research approach combines fieldwork, pilot experiments, and modelling to provide a robust framework for integrating nature-based solutions into SO management. This can alleviate the pressure on treatment infrastructure and reduce dependence on grey infrastructure, building resilience and long-term sustainability.
