They are just complying with the EU AI Act’s transparency rules (Code of Practice on Transparency of AI-Generated Content), so with this, newer Claude models embed an invisible, machine-readable watermark in the text they generate. Supported image/file outputs (like PNG, JPG, SVG) get signed provenance metadata (using the C2PA standard). Under the EU AI Act (Article 50), providers of generative AI systems must ensure synthetic outputs (text, images, audio, video) are marked in a machine-readable way so they can be detected as AI-generated or manipulated. This became applicable from 2 August 2026 (with a transition period until 2 December 2026 for systems already on the market before that date).
