Purple-striped jellyfish Recently, a bloom of venomous mauve stinger or purple-striped jellyfish was reported by marine researchers across the Visakhapatnam coast. About Purple-striped jellyfish: Appearance: It usually appears a blue purple (mauve) colour with a globe shaped umbrella covered in orangey brown warts. Habitat: It is primarily pelagic or in the open ocean. However, this species can survive in benthic and temperate coastal habitats. Distribution: It is found worldwide in tropical and warm-temperature seas. It is mainly found in the Indo-Pacific, Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea. Unique feature: Unlike other jellyfish species, it has stingers not just on the tentacles, but on the bell too. These are bioluminescent, having an ability to produce light in the dark. It is venomous and causes varying degrees of illness such as diarrhoea, extreme pain, vomiting and anaphylactic shock. A jellyfish bloom is when the population of the species increases dramatically within a short period of time, usually due to a higher reproduction rate. According to marine biologists, jellyfish blooms are reported frequently as a result of rising ocean temperatures, one of the main causes of substantial population growth.

India's Foreign Direct Investment Trends The Finance Ministry has released a comprehensive review shedding light on India's foreign direct investment (FDI) landscape, revealing both declines and hopeful prospects. India's net FDI inflows dropped by almost 31% to USD 25.5 billion over the first ten months of 2023-24. Overall global FDI flows rose by 3% to an estimated USD 1.4 trillion in 2023, but flows to developing countries fell by 9% due to economic uncertainty and higher interest rates. While a modest increase in global FDI flows is anticipated in 2024, significant risks remain, including geopolitical tensions, high debt levels, and global economic uncertainties. Around 65% of India's FDI equity inflows were observed in services, drugs and pharmaceuticals, construction (infrastructure activities), and non-conventional energy sectors. The Netherlands, Singapore, Japan, the USA, and Mauritius accounted for approximately 70% of the total FDI equity inflows into India.

Krishi Integrated Command and Control Centre Context :- The Union Agriculture Minister recently launched the Krishi Integrated Command and Control Centre (ICCC) at Krishi Bhavan in New Delhi, marking a major stride forward in the field of agricultural technology. Krishi Integrated Command and Control Centre (ICCC) About: The Krishi ICCC is a state-of-the-art tech-based solution housed in the Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers’ Welfare, designed to aid in making informed decisions using multiple IT applications and platforms such as weather data from the India Meteorological Department (IMD); sowing data from Digital Crop Survey; farmer-and farm-related data from Krishi Mapper (an application for geo-fencing and geo-tagging of land); market intelligence information from the Unified Portal for Agricultural Statistics (UPAg); and yield estimation data from the General Crop Estimation Survey (GCES). It leverages technologies such as artificial intelligence, remote sensing, and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to collect and process granular agricultural data. The ICCC gives information on crop yields, production, drought situation, cropping patterns, relevant trends, outliers, and Key Performance Indicators (KPIs). It also provides insights, alerts, and feedback on agriculture schemes, programs, projects, and initiatives. It includes map, timeline, and drill-down views, offering a comprehensive macro picture through the Krishi Decision Support System (DSS). This integrated visualisation facilitates quick and efficient decision-making and can be linked with the PM-Kisan chatbot in the future. Practical Applications: Farmer’s Advisory: The ICCC allows visualisation of GIS-based soil carbon mapping and soil health card data, enabling the generation of customised advisories for farmers regarding suitable crops and their water and fertiliser requirements. Drought Actions: The ICCC correlates yield data with weather and rainfall information, facilitating proactive decision-making in response to changes in yield from specific regions. Crop Diversification: Analysis of crop diversification maps and field variability for paddy assists in identifying regions with potential for diversified cropping, enabling tailored advice for farmers. Farm Data Repository: The Krishi Decision Support System (K-DSS) acts as an agriculture data repository, supporting evidence-based decision-making and the preparation of customised advisories for farmers. Validation of Yield: The ICCC validates yield data captured through Krishi MApper with data generated through the General Crop Estimation Survey (GCES) application for a plot, ensuring accuracy and reliability. Way Forward: ICCC can create an ecosystem for generating individual farmer-level advisories through apps like Kisan e-mitra and a chatbot developed for PM-Kisan beneficiaries. The Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence based system will identify a farmer through their mobile number or Aadhaar, match it with their field information from land records, historical crop sowing information, and weather data from IMD, and generate a customised advisory in the local language using the Bhashini platform for translation into several Indian languages

The Issue of Stray dogs in India Introduction   Lately, Stray dogs have been in news, due to their attacks on children and men, in multiple incidents. In Telangana’s Khammam district, a five-year-old boy died after being attacked by a stray dog while playing outside. This is the second dog attack incident in less than a month. A few incidents involved the death of the victim. These incidents have ignited the debate among the people raising concerns against the rising population of dogs and the dog lovers.  Therefore, it becomes important to know about the reasons behind rising dog attacks in India and the policy steps that can be taken to handle this situation. Some facts regarding the stray dog population in India In 2019, it was stated in Lok Sabha that the stray dog population went down by 18 lakhs in 7 years from 1.71 crores to 1.53 crores. Some independent studies suggest the population is much higher as many go unaccounted for. Globally, dog-mediated rabies causes an estimated 59,000 human deaths annually. According to WHO, India accounts for 36% of the global deaths due to rabies. India also accounts for 65% of the deaths due to rabies in the South-East Asia region. The National Rabies Control Program reported 6644 clinically suspected cases and deaths of human rabies between 2012 and 2022. According to the National Institute of Communicable Diseases, almost 96% of rabies cases in India are caused by stray dogs – and so India leads the world in rabies deaths. What are the reasons for the increasing stray dog crisis in India? Lack of proper animal birth control programs: There are not enough animal birth control programs in place to control the population of stray dogs. For example, in some areas, dogs are often left unsterilised, which leads to more puppies and an increasing population of stray dogs. Irresponsible ownership: Many people in India often abandon their pets on the streets when they are no longer wanted, or they let their dogs roam free without proper supervision. This leads to an increase in the stray dog population. Poor waste management: Stray dogs often scavenge for food in garbage dumps, which are not properly managed in many areas of India. This leads to an increase in the number of stray dogs in these areas. Lack of awareness: Many people in India are not aware of the importance of responsible pet ownership or the dangers of abandoning their pets. This lack of awareness contributes to the increasing stray dog crisis. Religious beliefs: Some communities in India believe that killing or sterilizing dogs is against their religious beliefs. This can make it difficult to implement effective animal birth control programs and control the population of stray dogs. Inadequate animal welfare laws: The current animal welfare laws in India are not strong enough to protect animals from abuse and neglect. This leads to an increase in the number of stray dogs, as there are no penalties for irresponsible ownership or abandonment. What are steps taken by the government to address the stray dog crisis? Animal Birth Control (ABC) program: The ABC programme wherein dogs are sterilised, vaccinated and replaced in their original areas is the only effective method to reduce street dog population, end biting and eliminate rabies. For example, in 2019, the government of Kerala sterilized over 87,000 stray dogs under this program. Vaccination drives: The government conducts vaccination drives to protect stray dogs against diseases such as rabies. For example, in 2020, the government of Tamil Nadu conducted a vaccination drive for stray dogs in the city of Chennai. Awareness campaigns: The government conducts awareness campaigns to educate people on responsible pet ownership and the importance of controlling the stray dog population. For example, the Delhi government launched a campaign called “Be a Human, Save a Life” to encourage people to adopt stray dogs and help control their population.

Brucethoa isro Researchers recently named a new species of deep-sea isopod discovered off the Kerala coast after the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). About Brucethoa isro: It is a new species of deep-sea isopod discovered off the Kollam coast, Kerala. The tiny fish-parasitic crustacean, belonging to the genus Brucethoa, was recovered from the base of the gill cavity of the Spinyjaw greeneye, a marine fish. It is the second species within this genus to be documented in India. It has been named Brucethoa isro in honour of the Indian space agency’s successful space missions. Females of the species tend to be larger than males. Females grow to about 19 mm in length and 6 mm in width, while males are smaller at around half the size.  What are Isopods? Isopods are an order of invertebrates (animals without backbones) that belong to the greater crustacean group of animals, which includes crabs and shrimp. They also live in many different types of habitats, from mountains and deserts to the deep sea and they are distributed worldwide. Features: They are one of the most morphologically diverse of all the crustacean groups, coming in many different shapes and sizes Isopods often do not look alike, but they do have common features. For example, all isopods have two pairs of antennae, compound eyes and four sets of jaws. Their body consists of seven segments, each with its own pair of walking legs. Isopods have a short abdominal section composed of six segments, called “pleons,” and one or more of these segments is fused into a tail section. About half of the known species of isopods live in the ocean. Others live in coastal and shelf waters, moving around on the seafloor or living in plants. Most of them are free-living, but a number of marine species are parasitic on other animals.

Lianas As the world grapples with rising temperatures, a groundbreaking study led by the University of the Sunshine Coast, Australia exposes an unlikely menace of Lianas. About Lianas: Lianas (also known as vines, climbing plants or climbers) are plants with long, flexible, climbing stems that are rooted in the ground, and usually have long dangling branches. They particularly thrive in disturbed forest areas — such as those affected by logging, natural treefalls, landslides because they can quickly grow towards the forest canopy using trees as support. In terms of climate, lianas are more resilient to variations in moisture and temperature, which gives them a competitive advantage over trees. They use their climbing ability, resilience to climatic stress, and efficient water and nutrient usage to outcompete trees for sunlight and resources. They compete for sunlight in the canopy and suppress trees. Their lower carbon sequestering capacity compared to trees further exacerbates the threat to carbon storage. Impacts on forest ecosystem An increase in lianas’s competitive success over trees can significantly affect the forest ecosystem. Lianas, being a disturbance-favouring plant form, can impact trees from the understory to the canopy. Their prolific growth following heavy disturbance can lead to decreased tree regeneration, growth and survival, altering forest structure and ecosystem function, which, in turn, can affect the subsequent recovery of forest.  Its proliferation can alter nutrient cycling within forests and decrease the overall resilience of forests to environmental changes, making ecosystems more susceptible to further disturbances.
