ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT is a condition where growth (physical and mental) stops in humans. And where it happens, we don’t say “Life is not a race”, “You’re not in competition with anybody” or “All that matters is that you’re doing your best”. Heck no! You declare a medical emergency and do all you can to salvage such a situation. Because deep down, we all know LIFE IS A RACE, a highly competitive one. Why do you think some of your former school mates DM or call you to “check up on you”? You think it’s all love and light? The call is often a measurement stick comprising of probing questions like “So where are you now?” If you’re Nigerian, you know the implied meaning of that question. It’s not about your Geography, but your positioning on the economic ladder. And if you’re a parent, the call often progresses to your children. Some of you have fantastic answers to those questions that you proudly respond with. “Oh you mean Junior? He’s in SS3 now. He just became the Head Boy”, you say proudly into the phone, beaming red with smiles. “Ah my husband? He’s fine oh. You know he was among the recent batch of promotions. He’s the DG now. Help me thank God.” “Me? I’m heading to California next month for my Masters, fully sponsored” You’re happy to have confident responses. And the person on the other end cannot resist measuring all you just said against their own situation. And you know this when you ask in return and their response is vague or evasive. I don’t mean to project the dark sides of our shared humanity. It will exist nonetheless. Of course there are people who are genuinely happy for us, but do not take for granted that it’s a race. A race against time, relevance and the parts of yourself that want to stay insignificant. Anybody can come in here and beat their chest about how well they are allegedly doing, but time is a revealer and the the toughest reality check. The MEAT (Money, Energy, Attention, Time) you waste today chasing tap swapping and other overhyped ventures will speak in 10-15 years when your friends call. Be humble NOW, not later, and let’s revisit your foundations. These schemes target people who drifted from their original plan. I have made good friendships and relationships with followers I first connected with on Facebook. Some of them have invited me to their celebratory events and when they talk about their lives, the pattern is the same. It was never loud or overnight. All they celebrate today was the result of planning, delayed gratification and common sense, executed over the long term. Everybody can do it. But whether everybody WILL, is another matter entirely. Let’s start with a plan, a sense of direction, your compass that will set you on a path to glory. Our 2-day event starts today and this is the final call. Being a handsome young man is a flex while you’re in secondary school/University. And if you’re athletic or a good dancer, you’re perceived to be the cream of the crop. But then life gets real very quickly as the system of measurement changes upon graduation. It becomes about where you work, the real world influence you wield and how much money you make. Imagine those who didn’t care much for the social game of University days and optimized for the game that would matter in future. They got a Headstart. In the game of life, you must not only be aware of the current game, but the nature of the next one. What is celebrated today at your current level won’t be looked upon favorably when you age 5 more years. For example, your 20s are a great time to bag certain awards and be celebrated for them. But do not get so intoxicated with the adulations that you neglect to optimize today for what will be the measurement in your 30s. There’s an age to apply for grants and when you get it, you can post online and people celebrate you. If you post the same thing after a certain age, people start to wonder if all is well, regardless of what they actually say. Your Lifestyle Blueprint should be meditated on daily to give you a sense of growth and direction. It should protect you from distractions and schemes intended for drifters. Daily hypnotize yourself into re-committing to this plan and only accept opportunities in this direction. In what country would you like to raise your kids? In that future, what does your office look like? In that future, what’s your income level and the size of your charitable contributions to society? In that future, how do you see your level of influence and affluence? Growth doesn’t just happen. You must curate it intentionally. Nobody will call you daily to check up on you EXCEPT BILLS.
