As we enter another election cycle - just how much is wasted (some laundered) on this ridiculous theatre? When many of us know the result is already predetermined.
2020 gave them a great opportunity to “expand the empire” - we are now spending 3x the 2014 budget just to secure an extra 2% participation. Yes - you read that correctly! Amazing how these bureautwats justify things eh?
2014 General Election:
$85 Million
2017 General Election: $97 Million
2020 General Election (COVID Peak): $236.4 Million (Includes the standard base funding of $176m, plus $18.2m for concurrent referendums, $28.7m in COVID-19 hygiene/social distancing setups, and a $13.5m emergency injection when the election date was delayed by a month).
2023 General Election: $229 Million (Marked the formal transition where extended multi-day advance voting infrastructure was permanently built into the baseline operational budget).
2026 General Election (Budget): $235 Million (Est.) (Maintains the permanent 12-day advance voting model, but streamlines baseline costs by removing on-the-day voter enrolment processing).
Note that 2026 is at same level as 2020 - and there’s no Covid six years on!!!
Do you see how they always encroach further? Grow the bureaucracy? More rules & policies. All for your benefit right? (cough cough)?
At almost $100 per voter - can I opt to take the cash instead?

Despite me reducing power usage - my monthly bill is up…a massive 28% in one year per unit of power consumed. CPI/inflation in nz was 4.1% for the year.
So how on earth do they justify a 7x more than inflation increase.
