🇬🇧: Statement by the General Students' Committee (AStA) of the University of Duisburg-Essen on anti-Semitic incidents on our campus We as AStA are committed to a campus culture that is free of hate and discrimination of any kind. We stand up against racism, anti-Semitism, queer hostility and all kinds of group-related hostility towards people; the campus should be a safe space for all of us. We are shocked that groups are planning events on our campus that have attracted attention for (Israel-related) antisemitism in the past. We condemn questioning Israel's right to exist, as was done by the group "Palästinasolidarität Duisburg" at its last demos, among other things by chanting "From the river to the sea... Palestine will be free" and on Instagram. Fortunately, the information stand planned by "Palästinasolidarität Duisburg" at the Duisburg campus was cancelled. We are also shocked that "Students for Future Duisburg" are working together with groups such as "Young Struggle", "Zora Duisburg" & "Pride Rebellion Duisburg", who took part in the demo of "Palestine Solidarity Duisburg" and attracted attention with anti-Semitic statements. We have informed "Students for Future Duisburg" that we will no longer provide them with AStA rooms if they do not distance themselves from these groups in a credible way and we call on the university not to provide rooms for these groups either. Furthermore, anti-Semitic graffiti has been discovered in the AStA basement, which we condemn and whose vile wording we do not wish to reproduce here. We have reported these to the police. This statement is not a fundamental position on the Middle East conflict. We stand by all Palestinian and Israeli students and hope that the violence against civilians on both sides will end as soon as possible. It is very important to us that a condemnation of anti-Semitism of any kind does not result in anti-Muslim racism, which we condemn just as strongly.

Ebenfalls schockiert uns, dass “Students for Future Duisburg” u.a. im Rahmen ihrer kritischen O-Woche in Duisburg zusammenarbeiten mit Gruppen wie “Young Struggle”, “Zora Duisburg” & “Pride Rebellion Duisburg”, welche an der Demo von “Palästinasolidarität Duisburg” teilgenommen haben sowie durch antisemitische Statements aufgefallen sind. Wir haben “Students for Future Duisburg” mitgeteilt, dass wir ihnen keine AStA-Räume mehr zur Verfügung stellen werden, sollte nicht eine glaubwürdige Distanzierung von diesen Gruppen erfolgen und wir fordern die Universität auf, ebenfalls keine Räume für diese Gruppen zur Verfügung zu stellen. Desweiteren wurden antisemitische Schmierereien im AStA-Keller entdeckt, die wir verurteilen und dessen üblen Wortlaut wir hier nicht wiedergeben möchten. Diese haben wir zur Anzeige gebracht. Dieses Statement ist keine grundsätzliche Positionierung zum Nahost-Konflikt. Wir stehen an der Seite von allen palästinensischen und israelischen Studis und hoffen, dass die Gewalt gegen Zivilist:innen auf beiden Seiten beendet wird. Uns ist sehr wichtig, dass eine Verurteilung von Antisemitismus jeglicher Art keinen antimuslimischen Rassismus zur Folge hat, einen solchen verurteilen wir ebenso scharf.

Wir als AStA bekennen uns zu einer Campuskultur, die frei von Hass und Diskriminierung jeglicher Art ist. Wir setzen uns gegen Rassismus, Antisemitismus, Queerfeindlichkeit und alle Arten von gruppenbezogener Menschenfeindlichkeit ein, der Campus soll ein Safe Space sein für alle von uns. Wir sind schockiert darüber, dass Gruppen an unserem Campus Veranstaltungen planen, die in der Vergangenheit durch (israelbezogenen) Antisemitismus aufgefallen sind. Wir verurteilen, das Existenzrecht Israels in Frage zu stellen, wie es durch die Gruppe “Palästinasolidarität Duisburg” auf dessen letzten Demos u.a. durch Sprechchöre wie “From the river to the sea… Palestine will be free” sowie auf Instagram geschehen ist. Der am Campus Duisburg geplante Infostand von “Palästinasolidarität Duisburg” wurde zum Glück abgesagt.

Why do we feel compelled to cancel the semester ticket or recommend cancellation for the primary election? The fact that we are burdening students financially by demanding a semester fee was made possible by a ruling that found that the immense price advantage of the semester ticket over common subscription tickets gives students a fundamental financial advantage. Thus, the solidarity model was justified. Here we are talking about a price difference of 60-80%, depending on the location. With the Deutschlandticket, this advantage no longer exists. The discount is only around 25% - the solidarity principle is therefore no longer in place and, in the event of successful legal action, this would mean costs for the student body in the millions. When will there be a cheap alternative for the Deutschlandticket for students? A state-wide or national solution for an alternative to the Deutschlandticket is in the hands of the politicians. We are working to ensure that we students are finally heard and taken into account and that there is a good alternative, such as a cheaper semester ticket that is valid throughout Germany. Why has the ticket been compulsory so far? The previous semester ticket could only be offered at such a low price because all students paid the same amount due to the solidarity principle. A differentiation between students without/with a ticket is therefore not possible.

Warum sehen wir uns gezwungen, das Semesterticket kündigen zu müssen bzw. eine Kündigung für die Urwahl zu empfehlen? Dass wir Studis finanziell durch die Einforderung eines Semesterbeitrags belasten, war möglich durch ein Urteil, welches feststellte, dass durch den immensen Preisvorteil des Semestertickets gegenüber gängigen Abotickets ein grundsätzlicher finanzieller Vorteil für Studierende gegeben ist. So ist das Solidarmodell gerechtfertigt gewesen. Hier sprechen wir von einem Preisunterschied von 60-80%, je nach Standort. Durch das Deutschlandticket ist dieser Vorteil nicht mehr gegeben. Die Vergünstigung beträgt nur noch um die 25% - das Solidarprinzip ist somit nicht mehr gegeben und im Falle von erfolgreichen Klagen würde dies Kosten für die Studierendenschaft im Millionenbereich bedeuten. Wann kommt eine günstige Alternative für das Deutschlandticket für Studis? Eine landes- oder bundesweite Lösung einer Alternative des Deutschlandtickets liegt in den Händen der Politiker:innen. Wir setzen uns dafür ein, dass wir Studis endlich gehört und berücksichtigt werden und dass es eine gute Alternative, wie z.B. ein deutschlandweit gültiges und günstigeres Semesterticket, geben wird. Warum ist das Ticket bisher verpflichtend gewesen? Das bisherige Semesterticket konnte preislich nur so günstig angeboten werden, da alle Studis aufgrund des Solidarprinzips den gleichen Betrag gezahlt haben. Eine Differenzierung in Studis ohne/mit Ticket ist somit nicht möglich.

🇬🇧: 🚨Update on the semester ticket 🗞️ At the last StuPa meeting, it was decided that we will not cancel the semester ticket directly, but that a primary election (Urwahl) will be held as provided in the student body's constitution. All students will therefore have a direct say in the future of the semester ticket in a primary election (20th-24th November). We will inform you on all channels about the primary election and our recommendation and the legal problems with the ticket, in advance. In order to get into conversation with as many of you as possible, a general meeting (Vollversammlung) will take place on 07th November. We have summarised your previous questions about the ticket and our procedure in this post. Please feel free to send us further questions, which we will then answer here on social media or at the general meeting.🤗

🚨Update zum Semesterticket 🗞️ Auf der letzten StuPa-Sitzung wurde entschieden, dass wir das Semesterticket nicht direkt kündigen, sondern für einen solchen Fall eine Urwahl in der Satzung der Studierendenschaft vorgesehen ist. Alle Studis werden also bei einer Urwahl (20.-24.11.) direkt über die Zukunft des Semestertickets mitentscheiden können. Im Vorhinein werden wir auf allen Kanälen über die Urwahl und unsere Empfehlung bzw. die rechtlichen Probleme mit dem Ticket informieren. Um mit möglichst vielen von euch ins Gespräch zu kommen, findet am 07.11. eine Vollversammlung statt. Eure bisherigen Fragen zum Ticket und unserem Vorgehen haben wir in diesem Beitrag zusammengefasst. Am Mittwoch geht es weiter mit der Campus Rallye am Campus Duisburg mit Asta Stand und Chill out area. Auch auf dem Campus Essen wird es eine Info Ecke geben, an der ihr euch vernetzen könnt. Afterwards we will continue with the first semester welcome speech by the rectorate from 12-13 p.m., in the Audimax R14, where our chair will introduce himself and the AStA. On Wednesday we will be present at the Campus Rallye on the Duisburg Campus with an Asta booth and chill out area. There will also be an info corner on the Essen campus where you can network. Unfortunately, the talks were not successfully. We could not be offered a cheaper ticket until now. It is important to us to avert the financial damage that a lawsuit against the semester ticket would bring, and at the same time we want to make it clear to politicians that we students will not be forgotten again! ❗️That is why we in the AStA has decided to introduce a motion to cancel the semester ticket in the student parliament. If the cancellation is approved, we would still have a semester ticket until the end of the summer semester 2024. After that, as of now, there would no longer be a semester ticket as of the winter semester 24/25. We do not want that in any case! That is why we continue to fight for the student body to be able to offer a cheaper tick! The cancellation will also serve as a means of pressure so that the VRR, the state of NRW and the federal government finally act.
