Anchor Effect If you ask any of us how we make a decision or a judgment about something important, most of the time you will hear a statement like, "I examine the situation from all angles first, rationalize it, and then make a decision". Here, however, lies a great misconception. In fact, even the most "considered" and "weighted" decisions are not as rational as we think. The peculiarity of our perception called "anchor effect" is to blame. The essence of this phenomenon is that the first impression is firmly fixed in our brain and becomes a kind of "starting point" for all subsequent information received on the same occasion. The most curious thing is that this "starting point" cannot be moved afterwards by any force: the anchor effect works even if you know about it or the first information is completely absurd.
