THE FALL One of a series of influential occult engravings by William Law, in explication of the principles in the arcane thought of the Rosicrucian, Jacob Boehme, from The Works of Jacob Behmen, The Teutonic Theosopher, Vol 1, 1764. Plate 9 illustrates the Fall of Adam, into the darkness of Satan. The tie with Sophia (the upper S) is severed, because Adam has elected to forsake her: Sophia sends down a pleromic light, but is unable to save Adam. He has lost whatsoever was good and desirable both in himself and round about him. He lies as dead, on the outmost Borders of the Spirit of this World. Like Sophia, the planets and all the stars, pour down their radiance, as though to support and aid Adam, who is now in danger of being swallowed up in the belly of dark Satan.

DEMONS - VANITY The lady admiring herself in the mirror sees only a reflection of the Demon s posterior. This symbol of Vanity was cut by the German artist, Albrecht Durer, for the book, Der Ritter von Turn, compiled by de la Tour Landry, in the 14th century, written as a course of instruction and guidance for his daughters.

This detail shows Time (Zeit) turning the Wheel of Fortune, aided by a fox (Fuchs). The named birds include a peacock, a falcon, a magpie, a pheasant and an eagle - these may have been heraldic devices. The print is often wrongly attributed to Albrecht Durer.

Titlepage to Jacob Boehme, Alle Theosophische Schrifften, 1682, which was published by Boehme s disciple, Johan Gichtel. As is so often the case with the Boehme illustrations, the design centres upon an Eye. This is incorporated into a burning triangle, which is overlaid over a triangle symbolic of the element of Water - together, the two triangles are not only preparatory to forming the Seal of Solomon, but they also represent the conflict of opposites (Fire and Water). The full appreciation of the Boehme symbols and designs (especially those drawn by such men as Gichtel or Freher) require a familiarity with his writings. For example the numbers on the clock-face (as Boehme calls the device) point to Time, while the letters of the alphabet concentric to this dial represents Space.
