Thousands of students from across European countries who attended UK universities have left without paying a penny of the £893million used to support their degrees.
The newest figures from the Student Loans Company reveal it is currently trying to track down the whereabouts of more than 42,000 former university students.
The Government-owned company has been coordinating with authorities across the
EU in an effort to locate the missing students.
SLC has confirmed it is trying to find, in total, 121,000 former students with outstanding loans worth £3.4billion.
Of that total number, around 15,000 are thought to have moved to Australia, 7,600 to the United States, and around 5,500 to both Spain and Ireland.
There are also thought to be 5,300 graduates in the United Arab Emirites, 1,500 in China, 3,500 in Bulgaria, and 3,500 in Romania. | 35 |

近年不少香港人投資英國物業市場,尤其是倫敦核心豪宅地段,然而,高樓價的表面背後,其實暗藏隱憂。根據《金融時報》的報導,踏入2026年,倫敦核心地段的物業交易取消(Fall throughs,即「撻訂」,平均650宗有150宗撻訂,其比例已經攀升至2008年全球金融海嘯以來的最高水平。
每月150宗交易流產 比例直逼2008年金融危機
踏入2026年至今,倫敦核心區的物業市場在交投數字成績亮麗,今年平均每月約有650宗成功獲買家出價並進入交易程序(going under offer)。然而,每月有650個物業獲承接的同時,同一時期每個月平均竟然有多達150宗交易最終宣告「撻訂」(fall throughs)。「取消交易比例」創至2008年「金融海嘯」的新高。
不過值得留意的是,在英國買樓,買家出價(Offer)被業主接受後,一般不需要即時付款,即沒有香港買樓時需繳付的細訂及大訂,但是買家申請按揭需要繳付行政費用200至300英鎊(約2,101至3,152港元),或有代理要求買家提供財務證明,並可能會收取約1,000 至2,000英鎊(約10,507至21,016港元)作為排他性協議的誠意金,以表明買家有實力及誠意。故英國樓「撻訂」的成本比港樓為低。
97日成交期 「撻訂」成本低 成買賣死穴
由於英國物業交易的流程需時,普遍需時最少3個月至6個月不等,加上買家「撻訂」的成本低,房地產分析機構 LonRes報告指,現時平均長達97日的交易期,在瞬息萬變的樓市中成為了致命傷。加上物業盤源源源不絕,截至3月底,倫敦核心區的市場放盤量按年增加了13.8%;500萬英鎊以上的放盤亦增加了7.2%。新放盤(New instructions)整體微升2.7% 。買家在漫長的等待中,絕對有足夠時候在市場上尋找更優質的物業,令買家極大誘因去「轉換目標」(switch horses)。 | 35 |

下一代的前景憂慮: 許多人移居是為了子女教育,但看到英國年輕一代面臨「非就學、非就業、非培訓(NEET)」的困境,甚至在倫敦以外的地區看到許多無所事事的青年,家長開始擔心子女融入當地後的出路可能還不如香港。
社會不穩與排外情緒: 英國內部目前政治分歧嚴重,排外情緒升溫,這也是促使部分移民重新考慮回流的因素之一。
另一位講者也補充,英美的薪酬差距比香港小很多(高低職位的收入較平均),而香港的專業人士(如醫生)與基層的薪酬差距巨大,因此習慣了香港高收入的中產在英國會感到特別辛苦。

英國非法偷渡問題再度引發巨大爭議。有媒體近日公開一段震撼影片,顯示法國海軍在英倫海峽附近,向乘坐小艇的非法移民投擲救生衣。畫面中,大批偷渡客身穿橙色救生衣,法國軍艦則在旁航行,水手更不斷向船上人士拋出救生裝備,場面令不少英國民眾質疑,法國到底是在阻止偷渡,還是在「協助」偷渡。
報道指出,今年已有接近一萬名非法移民成功橫越英倫海峽進入英國。由於法國北部加強巡邏,偷渡集團更改變策略,改於更遠的地區出發,包括距離加來超過一百英里的Dieppe一帶,甚至延伸至比利時沿岸,以避開法國警方攔截。部分偷渡船更需在海上漂流超過二十二小時,情況極度危險。雖然英國政府強調,已與法國簽署高達六億六千萬英鎊的新邊境合作協議,又聲稱成功阻止超過四萬二千名非法移民偷渡,但外界質疑,成效是否真的如官方所言。
更令民眾憤怒的是,法國海軍向非法移民提供救生衣的畫面,無疑令不少人感到英法邊境政策出現嚴重矛盾。一方面,英國政府不斷強調打擊偷渡、加強遣返;另一方面,法方人員卻在海上向偷渡者提供支援。部分英國民眾認為,這種做法等同變相鼓勵偷渡,更令人口販賣集團有恃無恐。亦有聲音指出,只要英國仍然被視為「容易留下來」的地方,非法移民問題便難以真正解決。
