𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗜𝘁 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗸𝘀? ￫ A vacuum box is a rigid enclosure that gets sealed against the tank floor. ￫ It has a vacuum port that connects to a vacuum pump. ￫ Once sealed, the pump creates negative pressure inside the box. 𝗗𝗲𝗳𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝗗𝗲𝘁𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: ￫ If there are any cracks, holes or defects in the floor plates or welds within the test area, air will get sucked in. ￫ This air flow results in a loss of vacuum that gets detected by the pressure gauge. ￫ To make leak points visually obvious, a soap solution can be applied before testing. Bubbles will form at any openings. 𝗔𝗽𝗽𝗹𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: ￫ The box is pressed firmly on the tank floor to create an airtight seal, often using pliable putty or clay. ￫ The test typically uses a grid pattern to cover the entire bottom systematically. ￫ Any drops in vacuum during the procedure indicate flaws in the floor plates or welds for that area. ￫ This allows defective areas to be marked for further evaluation. 𝗔𝗱𝘃𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗴𝗲𝘀: ￫ Vacuum box testing is fast, affordable and can be done without any drainage or downtime. ￫ It provides reliable detection of even small holes or fractures. 𝗟𝗶𝗺𝗶𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀: ￫ The method only covers a small section at a time. ￫ Very tight cracks may not be identified. ￫ Surface prep like cleaning is required for good seals.
