CSAT : The exam, the myth and the legend
CSAT has for sure become a giant killer now. A multi Goliath slaying David.
I have never faced difficulties CSAT, including my attempt in 2022 which had a decently tough CSAT.
Some points on which CSAT can be tackled :
1. The potency of this exam is multiplied by the sheer situation in which one has to appear for it. Exhaustion of GS1. Listening to your ticked options going wrong by hearsay during the break. Some answers you know you marked wrong. The baggage of GS1 is carried over in CSAT. The sulky heat adds to this
You don't feel like attempting the paper itself.
This can be avoided. Just treat it as importantly as the first paper. Fight with all your might, your weapons. Do not let GS1 get into your mind. Avoid grapewines during the lunch break. Be isolated. Not giving up on csat is the first step.
2. Being an engineer, I usually do the quant /reasoning section first. But my suggestion would to start with the passages. Helps you ease your mind in the paper. Lets you settle. You can take your time to read passages. It's always worth to take a few extra minutes and mark the right answer.
Passages really cushion up the toughness. Attempt them diligently.
3. Coming to quant, the commission has levelled up. There are fewer lcm/hcf/formula based questions each year. More calculations, more reasoning. However, you can always find sitters. 8-10 of them atleast. Hunt them and mark them correctly. This is a sine qua non
4. Always try to solve reasoning based questions where 3 or 4 questions can be solved by decoding a single passage. Those are easy. Permutations and arrangements.
5. Ignore the bouncers. Some questions are purely memory or formula based and it only expends your time solving them
6. While in these last 25 odd days, keep a touch of csat by solving Pyq. Match them with the official keys. Keep practicing. I did this for 2 years of pyq
7. Biggest mistake which usually people commit is compartmentalising. "I'm an engineer hence I'll do only quant. I'm from humanities hence passages would sail me through". No. You got to be decent in both and better in one. Attempt both the sections.
However the sequence of attempt etc can be prioritized.
8. Another mistake people commit is attempt only 67-68 marks worth of questions, being super confident of their attempt. This is suicidal. Even if you feel that you have crossed the cutoff, keep fighting.
You waited for this day for years, just give it your all. Keep your spirit alive till the bell rings and solve as many as you can.
9. Repeating the importance of pyq in csat. Keep solving them.
10. On TG, you'll find some formula sheets being shared. Keep them printed or somewhere in a pdf and revise them during the lunch break. Helps your mind to calm down and be distracted from Gs1. I'll share if I have one

In the above question, you just had to find which ones are "mammals". The "information about diet" is extra and is not required to solve the question.
Usually, the above MCQ structure is designed to make the test-givers "spend extra time" on such questions.
So, always read the question carefully and identify " the intent" of the person framing the MCQ.

One of the key factors to perform well in the UPSC Civil Services Prelims exam is "Management of time".
Those who manage the time well, will eventually answer all the questions that they want to attempt.
And, this time management will be possible if you are "familiar" and "well-versed" with "Skeletal structures" that can used to form different types of MCQs.
If you know what you need to do in each type of such MCQ skeletal structure, you end up saving at-least 10 seconds per question, which results in about (10x100 Ques) 1000 seconds for all questions. That is Approximately 16.67 minutes of time saved.
This is one of the biggest reasons why many people couldn't finish the GS-1 paper in 2023 because they were surprised by the new type of "MCQ Structures" and took some extra time to process their thoughts and strategy.
So, spend time in analyzing these MCQ structures and have a "mindset" built to know what to do in each type of questions.
I'll keep sharing new type of MCQ skeletal structures in the coming days so that you become familiar with them and don't panic/get nervous by directly seeing new patterns in the exam.
Remember, prelims is not just about studying books and giving exam. It's a lot more than that on the mental level. We need to train our minds to perform "quickly and accurately" in the exam settings. Speed is of utmost important which is rarely discussed.
