Why funding exists Traditional futures have an expiration date, so their price typically converges with the underlying asset (such as oil, gas, or metals) as that date approaches.

For example: it's delivery (expiration) day. Real oil is trading at $80, but the futures contract is somehow at $95. Smart traders will sell the expensive future at $95 and simultaneously buy cheap physical oil at $80. Arbitrageurs pocket a nearly risk-free profit and quickly pull the futures price back toward $80.

Perpetual futures (perps) have no expiration — they can stay open for months or years. On top of that, markets can get very bullish, with people strongly convinced the price is going up. If they pile into a perp, its price starts climbing. There's no expiration to keep it in check, so the perp keeps getting more expensive — traders keep buying because the price keeps rising.

Say spot Brent is at $90 and the Brent perp is at $100. Arbitrageurs step in again: they buy oil (or spot) at $90 and short the perp at $100. Even if oil rallies to $120, their spot position gains +$30, the perp loses –$20, and they still walk away with +$10 in profit.

Thousands of traders will spot that opportunity, and the prices will converge. But what if the gap is tiny?

Say spot is $90 and the perp is $90.10. The potential profit is just $0.10. Factor in fees, slippage, and risk, and most arbitrageurs won't bother.

That gap can stick around for weeks. That's why exchanges introduced funding: if the perp is consistently above spot, longs pay shorts. Shorting becomes more attractive, and the perp comes back down. And vice versa. EPS and revenue beat expectations, but U.S. comparable store sales — a key measure of whether existing stores are selling more — rose only 2.6%, the slowest quarterly growth since 2020. Excluding new pharmacy pricing rules, growth would have been 3.4%, still below the 3.8% forecast. ↘️ Alibaba Group (BABA) -5%. EPS came in below expectations, while revenue was roughly in line.
