| 2 | North Korea Builds New Uranium Enrichment Facility, IAEA Says
North Korea has constructed a new uranium enrichment facility at the Yongbyon nuclear complex, capable of housing up to 28 centrifuge cascades, and has begun operating an expanded annex at the Kangson enrichment site, according to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
The Vienna-based nuclear watchdog reported that these findings indicate continued expansion of North Korea’s nuclear infrastructure at multiple sites.
In its August 28 report, the IAEA stated it used satellite imagery and open-source materials, including North Korean state media photographs, to monitor Pyongyang’s nuclear activities. The agency has not had inspectors in North Korea since 2009.
The agency identified a new two-story building at Yongbyon as the site’s second uranium enrichment facility by comparing state media photographs from Kim Jong Un’s June visit with satellite images taken during construction.
According to the report, photographs from the visit show gas centrifuge cascades installed on both floors of the main building, which can accommodate up to 28 cascades.
The report also noted that operations began in January at a uranium enrichment facility in Kangson, near Pyongyang, within an annex completed in 2024.
The IAEA stated that these developments in North Korea’s nuclear program violate U.N. Security Council resolutions.
“The ongoing operation of enrichment facilities at Kangson and Yongbyon and the reported further expansion of the DPRK’s production of weapons-grade nuclear material is a cause for serious concern,” IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi said in a statement to the board of governors on Monday, referring to the North’s official name, the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea.
The report was released together with Mr. Grossi’s statement.

| 4 | Paris Opens Trial of Migrant Smugglers
Fourteen men will stand trial in Paris on Tuesday on smuggling charges related to the drowning of more than 30 people in the Channel five years ago, the deadliest migrant disaster between France and Britain.
The migrants died when their overloaded dinghy deflated while crossing the Channel, one of the world's busiest shipping lanes.
Investigators allege that Afghan and Iraqi-Kurdish smuggling networks arranged the migrants' passage to Britain from camps near Grande-Synthe and Calais in northern France. The defendants are charged with involuntary manslaughter, facilitating illegal immigration as part of an organized gang, and criminal conspiracy.
A French fishing vessel alerted emergency services after spotting bodies in the water near Calais in November 2021, according to the court referral order. Twenty-seven victims were recovered, at least four remain missing, and only two survivors were found. Most victims were Iraqi Kurds, with others from Afghanistan, Ethiopia, Egypt, Somalia, Iran, and Vietnam. The youngest victim was a 7-year-old girl.
Court documents say migrants were packed onto an unsafe dinghy with too few life jackets. Experts found they had "no chance" in an emergency. Those charged with involuntary manslaughter include organizers, transporters, and logistics coordinators in the smuggling groups. Pakistan, US and Sri Lankan drug control agencies have busted an Afghan global narcotics trafficking network in a joint operation, seizing 671 kilograms of methamphetamine worth millions of dollars and arresting several suspects, Pakistan’s Anti-Narcotics Force (ANF) said.
The operation unfolded after ANF intelligence led to the seizure of 200 kilograms of crystal methamphetamine, commonly known as ice, from a container at Karachi Port in July. Two members of the network, including its Afghan ringleader, Ehsan Ullah, were arrested.
Acting on intelligence developed by the U.S. DEA’s Foreign Counterparts Unit, and Pakistan’s ANF’s Special Investigations Cell on suspicious maritime containers moving from Pakistan to Colombo, Sri Lanka’s Police Narcotics Bureau seized more narcotics: approximately 463 kg of crystal methamphetamine—valued at $21 million—concealed in bath towels, and arrested several suspects, including Pakistani nationals.
The combined seizures at Karachi and Colombo ports brought the total quantity of methamphetamine confiscated to 671 kilograms, according to the ANF. The operation exposed a network allegedly involved in moving Afghan-produced drugs through Pakistan and Sri Lanka to international markets.
While Afghanistan’s opium production has fallen sharply since the Taliban imposed a nationwide ban on poppy cultivation in April 2022, the country’s role in the global drug trade continues to evolve.
At the same time, methamphetamine and other synthetic drugs have gained greater prominence.

Russia’s Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov said on Sunday that Moscow has not ruled out a trilateral meeting between the presidents of Russia, the U.S. and China, state news agency TASS reported.

World food prices rose in August to their highest since late 2022, the United Nations’ Food and Agriculture Organization said on Friday.
The FAO Food Price Index, which tracks monthly changes in a basket of internationally traded food commodities, averaged 133.3 points in August, up from July’s revised reading of 130.8.
That was the highest score since November 2022, though nearly 17 per cent below a record peak from March 2022, after Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
The FAO’s price benchmarks for cereals, vegetable oils, sugar, meat and dairy all rose in August.
Among food categories, FAO’s cereals price index rose 2.2 per cent month-on-month to its highest since May 2024, and the vegetable oil index edged up 0.6 per cent to its highest since June 2022.
The agency’s sugar benchmark jumped 11.9 per cent to its highest since June 2025.
FAO cut its 2026 global cereal production forecast by 3.4 million metric tons from a previous estimate in July to 2.980 billion tons, now 2.0 per cent below 2025 in the largest annual decline since 2018.
“August’s increase in global food prices is a warning that the risk premium is returning to food markets: climate shocks, geopolitical tensions and disrupted trade logistics are converging to tighten supply expectations,” FAO Chief Economist Maximo Torero said in a statement.

During Brezhnev's era, L'Unità offered professors, intellectuals, and workers alike a central page on world affairs, a true window to deeper understanding. Now, that window has fogged over. Soporific thinking reigns: we judge by whispers and vague notions, turning our backs on reality. The results are all too visible.

Since I began my journey with Mean in Ukraine, a torrent of fake news about children has poured in: messages insist the Russians are saving them from organ trafficking, or that a sprawling criminal network, masterminded by Kyiv, pulls every string.
Corruption and disinformation, however, can also exist in a country like Ukraine.
That is true, but Russian aggression has ignited in Ukraine a fierce hunger for truth and transparency, seldom seen elsewhere. Over years of meeting officials and civil society, we've witnessed an unyielding spirit against war and corruption. We must celebrate the countless acts of non-violent resistance, especially among the youth. These are living proof that democracy, in the end, outlasts any manipulation.
Seen from Europe and Italy, how can all this translate?
For Italy, the sacred values woven into our Constitution must be fiercely defended. The press carries a tremendous duty to shape public opinion. We should shine a light on grassroots victories, not feed this feudal fantasy of the strong man that turns citizens into mere subjects. Wagner Fails in Africa: Jihadists Outmatch Russians

Moscow's missteps are unleashing chaos, and now that turmoil is creeping ever closer to our own doorstep.
And now what? That uneasy question echoes through the military juntas of the Sahel, from Mali to Burkina Faso to Niger. They ousted the French, then the Americans—tired of endless lectures on human rights and democracy, especially from Washington—and opened the doors to the Russians, only to find a reality far short of their hopes.
The Kremlin's offer was tempting: Moscow arrived as a pragmatic partner, free from colonial baggage and uninterested in Western-style preaching. The cost was clear: gold, diamonds, uranium, mining rights. It seemed like a fair bargain. Operation Barkhane ended in celebration, the UN's MINUSMA vanished, US bases in Agadez shut down, and Wagner swept in, later rebranded as Africa Corps after Prigozhin's death—same mercenaries, now approved by the Russian Ministry of Defense. The promises were bold, but the results were underwhelming.
Take Niger: on Saturday, the government proudly announced it had crushed a revolt with help from "Russian partners." Moscow quickly claimed victory and pledged stability. The reality is less impressive: only a handful of Russians are in Niger, mostly guarding the junta. They were meant to confront the jihadists of JNIM and ISIS Sahel, who control half the airstrip between Tillabéri and the Malian border, but the Russians are nowhere to be found. They do not patrol, hold territory, and rarely leave their compounds except to escort fuel convoys. They barely keep things from falling apart. Putin's real crisis is the war in Ukraine, which drains men, weapons, money, and attention. Africa serves as a propaganda stage—look, the West is losing ground; here is the alternative—but the resources are not there.
The Africa Corps has never managed more than 2,000 to 2,500 men across the vast Sahel, with forces stretched thin between Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger—a region half the size of Europe.
In Mali, the illusion is even thinner. The Russians have been present since 2021, and their failure is clear.
Since the French and UN left, the jihadists have not just held ground; they have surged forward. In September 2025, JNIM imposed a fuel blockade on Bamako, then in May, a total blockade of the capital. Malian army convoys only reach their destinations if escorted by Russians, and sometimes not even then. In late April, JNIM and the Azawad Liberation Front launched a joint offensive. Kidal, Tessalit, and Aguelhok—the northern bastions—fell.
In Kidal, the Russians found themselves surrounded and forced to negotiate a retreat with Algerian mediation, jeered by rebels as they withdrew. OSINT reports from May 7, 2026, detail three bases lost and about 2,500 men overwhelmed in seven cities at once.

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk stated that the next seven to eight months will be critical for the security of Ukraine, Poland, and the region.
He added that evidence indicates Russia is preparing to escalate its actions in Ukraine and neighboring areas. “According to intelligence assessments, Russia also plans to mobilize approximately 600,000 people,” emphasized Mr. Tusk.

| 18 | Study by Munich Scientists Questions EU Climate Policy on Electric Vehicles
Researchers at the Technical University of Munich (TUM) found that electric vehicles reduce CO₂ emissions by an average of 41 per cent compared to internal combustion engine cars, but are not entirely "carbon-free." The study will be presented in Munich in the coming days, according to BILD.
The authors argue that the EU's focus on tailpipe emissions is insufficient. They recommend assessing a vehicle's full lifecycle, including raw material extraction, production of steel, aluminum, and batteries, electricity sources during use, and end-of-life recycling.
The authors state that current regulations may misrepresent the true climate impact of various technologies and overlook investments in more sustainable materials and production methods. TUM President Thomas Hofmann said the study highlights a "significant error in the management of European climate strategy."
The study is being released ahead of upcoming discussions on EU automotive policy. In November, the European Parliament and the Council of the EU will review a European Commission package that sets future requirements for the automotive industry and limits new internal combustion engine cars after 2035.

| 20 | Kidnappers in Nigeria Took Ransoms in Excess of $5 million
Kidnappers in Nigeria collected more than $5 million in ransom payments over the last year, a Lagosbased intelligence group said Thursday, as the country faces a multifaceted security crisis.
“For every ransom that is paid for a kidnapping incident, you are simply birthing another kidnapping incident,” Kehinde Giwa, a security analyst at SBM Intelligence, said.
SBM Intelligence said in a report on Wednesday that $5.8 million was paid in ransom for releasing people who had been kidnapped between July 2025 and June 2026. The group said that 7,825 people were kidnapped in that time, a 66 per cent increase from the previous year.
