It is with great sadness that we inform you of the passing of Dr. Comdr. Demelash Kassaye an Associate Professor at the School of Social Work of Addis Ababa University. His funeral was held today, April 23, at Jamo Trinity Church - Alem Bank. We at Addis Ababa University extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, colleagues and students. May his soul rest in eternal peace.

Addis Ababa University Marks 75 Years of Excellence with a Bold Strategic Vision for Future! On the 8th of April 2025, Addis Ababa University held a press conference for state-owned and private media representatives at the Office of the President on the ongoing Autonomy Reform of the University and its upcoming 75th Diamond Jubilee celebration. Samuel Kifle (PhD), Interim President of Addis Ababa University, addressed journalists and media representatives at the event. During the press conference, he elaborated on the University's autonomous leadership initiatives. He highlighted the institution's five-year strategic plan, which is designed to foster academic excellence and enhance the quality of research for impactful outcomes. The plan also aims to strengthen community and industry engagement to address challenges effectively, provide superior health services, and promote collaboration and partnerships to support the University’s mission. Furthermore, it emphasizes the importance of resource diversification and mobilisation. An additional focus of the plan is to establish clean, green, and SMART campuses to support and enhance academic endeavours. In his address, he indicated that efforts are currently underway to draft and approve both existing and new policies, legal frameworks, and guidelines to enhance the implementation of the strategic plan with improved efficiency and effectiveness. In this context, he noted that the AAU Senate Legislation, Human Resource Management Directive, Procurement and Property Management Directive, Student Admission and Recruitment Policy, Resource Mobilisation and Diversification Policy, as well as the Research, Innovation, and Internationalization Policy and Strategy, have been approved by AAU’s governing board. He stated that the institution's extensive array of over 500 undergraduate and graduate programs have been evaluated and streamlined to 416, which are now categorized into seven colleges and one School of Law. In a similar vein, the assessment of research activities and the management of research institutes has led to the establishment of seven distinct research institutes. The Interim President also informed the media that following the approval of the organizational structure by the governing board, studies are undergoing to design the University’s human resource plan, undertake job evaluation and grading, as well as to conduct a cost-benefit analysis that takes into account the University’s financial capacity to realize salary and benefit offers. In reference to the 75th Diamond Jubilee celebration of Addis Ababa University, Dr. Samuel stated that the theme selected for this grand occasion is "Honoring our past, Reimagining our future." He highlighted that the University has graduated over 280,000 alumni in the last 75 years, playing a significant role in the advancement of Ethiopia and Africa, as well as serving as a catalyst for economic growth.

Call for Abstracts The Center for Ethiopian Languages and Cultures, Institute of Ethiopian Studies, at Addis Ababa University, in partnership with the Information Network Security Administration and the Addis Ababa City Government Culture, Arts and Tourism Bureau, is hosting a national conference titled "Language, Culture, and Technology in Development."

Book Launch: New Publication Offers Insights into Wealth Creation and Economic Development On February 20, 2025, Addis Ababa University, in cooperation with the Ethiopian Academy of Sciences, hosted a book launch event of “መንግሥትና ሃብት” (The State and Wealth) authored by AAU scholar Dr. Berhanu Beshah and published by the Ethiopian Academy of Sciences. The launch event of the 334-page book at the Main Campus attracted numerous scholars and researchers from AAU and beyond. A distinguished panel of experts discussed the major highlights and merits of the book. In a keynote, Dr. Samuel Kifle, the Interim President of Addis Ababa University, highlighted the significance of the book which examines the processes of wealth creation and destruction, outlines strategies for wealth expansion, and offers insights into economic principles and governmental practices, all of which are instrumental for national development. Dr. Mathews Ensermu, Vice President of the Office of the President of Addis Ababa University and Associate Professor at the College of Business and Economics who was on the reviewing panel, demonstrated that the book serves as a compelling illustration that a distinctive array of talents can serve as a blueprint for economic development in Ethiopia and can contribute to wealth creation. A second panelist, senior economist Dr. Alemayehu Seyoum remarked that the author regards the mathematical concept of “ብልሃት” (talent) as a significant source and metric of wealth, accentuating that talent enables individuals to generate and transform resources into products. He encouraged others to cultivate talent and to implement it scientifically to enhance efficiency. The February book launch event is the latest of similar events of significant scholarly works that offer fresh inputs and insights for policy and practice organized by AAU to motivate authors and generate scholarly debate

AAU Becomes Host of Africa’s UN Sustainable Development Solutions AAU celebrated a major institutional milestone when it became official host to the Sustainable Development Solutions Network Africa Center, which harnesses local knowledge to advance viable solutions to sustainable development challenges in Africa. Speaking at the inaugural event, the Interim President of AAU, Dr. Samuel Kifle said, the Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN) Africa Centre will serve as an important continental hub for knowledge exchange, policy innovation and strategic partnership, adding the inauguration of the Africa Center represents not only a significant achievement but also a rallying point for the continent to harness African expertise, utilize international support, and implement sustainable development solutions. Professor Jeffrey Sachs, the UN Sustainable Development Goals Solutions Network Head, for his part said AAU was selected to host the (SDSN) on account of its strong reputation and leadership role in African higher education as well as Ethiopia’s desirable characteristics as a Pan-Africa home hosting the Africa Union and its commitment to sustainable development. As the new SDSN Africa host institution, Addis Ababa University will have the opportunity to foster debate on sustainable development within African academia and beyond, create and meet demand for SDG-related education, bring together key actors including academia, government and civil society to identify and help solve Africa’s biggest sustainability challenges and demonstrate university impact. The Africa Center will coordinate the present 11 national and regional networks based in Africa, encompassing more than 25 countries and territories working on localizing and mobilizing support for the SDGs. The regional network center is affiliated to the world's largest knowledge network for the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN) mobilizing the world's universities, think tanks, research centers, and other knowledge institutions to identify and develop global and local solutions for action on the world's most critical sustainable development challenges. Finance Minister Ahmed Shide, Foreign Minister Gideon Timotiwos, Planning and Development Minister Fitsum Assefa, and other dignitaries attended the landmark AAU event.
