If he withdraws from it, seeks forgiveness, and repents, then his heart is cleansed. But if he returns to it then it is increased until it consumes his heart.* This is the Rān (stain of covering) that Allāh has mentioned:‎ {كَلَّا ۖ بَلْ ۜ رَانَ عَلَىٰ قُلُوبِهِم مَّا كَانُوا يَكْسِبُونَ (١٤)} “Nay! She would like to meet her husband in the best state, with the most beautiful appearance and most splendid dress, wich will stimulate his love and desire for her. So she does not want him to see from her anything that will turn him from her.   The All-Wise Legislator has indeed taken consideration to this. AN EXPLANATION OF THE RULINGS FOR THE WIFE MOURNING THE LOSS OF HER HUSBAND One- She must stay in the home where she lived with her husband when he passes away. She does not go out from it unless there is a need or a dire necessity such as going to the hospital due to illness and buying the things she needs from the market like bread, etc. This is only if she does not have anyone to do these things for her. Two- She avoids wearing alluring clothing. Three- She avoids all of types of parfume unless she has come off of her menses in which case there is no harm in her applying some scent. Four- She avoids wearing jewelry made of gold, silver, diamonds or anything else, whether it is necklaces, pearls, etc. Five- She avoids wearing al-Kohl because the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, forbade the mourning woman from all of these things. She can wash with water, soap, and lotus whenever she wants. She can speak with her relatives and women whenever she wants. She can sit with her male relatives that she is not allowed to marry (such as the brother, uncle, nephew, son, etc.) and serve them coffee and food. She can work in her house, house’s garden, and the porches night and day, doing all of the various types of housework like cooking, sewing, sweeping, washing clothes, milking the animals, etc. She can do everything the woman who is not mourning does. She can walk in the moonlight without her face covered like other women and she can toss her face cover over her head when she does not have a non relative chaperon.
