Vincent van Gogh cut off his left ear during a mental health crisis on December 23, 1888. This incident occurred after a heated argument with his friend and fellow artist, Paul Gauguin, in Arles, France. Van Gogh was experiencing severe mental health issues, including hallucinations and episodes of psychosis¹². During one of these episodes, he used a knife to cut off part of his ear, but he later had no memory of the event¹.
This act has been widely interpreted as a manifestation of his mental illness, which he struggled with throughout his life³. Despite his challenges, Van Gogh continued to create some of his most famous works during this period.
