| 7 |  Central Banks Are About to Repeat Their Most Damaging GFC Mistake!!
Basic economics: you don't hike into an energy supply shock.
The ECB has already made the 2008 mistake again β tightening into an energy-driven squeeze as growth weakens. The question now is whether a Warsh Fed will repeat it: hiking into an energy supply shock and mistaking an externally imposed price surge for overheated demand.
In 2008, Bernanke warned that 'the latest round of increases in energy prices has added to the upside risks to inflation and inflation expectations.' That concern was real. But it also became the rationale for central banks to fixate on headline inflation while the energy shock was already crushing real incomes and demand.
Higher energy costs are not evidence of excess demand. They're a tax on consumers, a margin squeeze on businesses, and a direct drag on growth. Rate hikes can't create oil, gas, power capacity, or geopolitical stability β they can only compound the damage the shock has already caused.
Investors remember the Fed's emergency cuts after Lehman. What they forget is that the Fed was positioning for eventual tightening at the exact moment the ECB was actually hiking into the GFC. What we're hearing today out of the Fed and ECB is the same narrative that preceded the GFC.
The question is whether the Warsh Fed will repeat that failure: answering an energy supply shock with tighter money, squeezing households and businesses even harder, and destroying demand just to prove it's serious about inflation.
Will the Fed ever learn? We already know the ECB hasn't..
