La gramática es la disciplina que estudia sistemáticamente las clases de palabras, las combinaciones posibles entre ellas y las relaciones entre esas expresiones y los significados que puedan atribuírseles. Esas propiedades, combinaciones y relaciones pueden formularse de maneras diversas y puede haber, por lo tanto, muchas gramáticas de la Gramática de una lengua. En el caso del español, existen tantos tratados gramaticales que parece que cada uno de los que van apareciendo necesita ya de alguna justificación, de algún signo diferencial o de algún rasgo que no haga redundante su propia existencia. No resulta difícil justificar el que ahora presentamos: la obra que el lector tiene en sus manos constituye la gramática más detallada que se haya escrito nunca sobre nuestra lengua, y — si descontamos algunas gramáticas francesas clásicas — una de las más exhaustivas que se hayan publicado nunca para cualquier idioma. Sus características externas fundamentales son cuatro: se trata de una obra colectiva, de un estudio descriptivo del idioma y de una obra de múltiple acceso que, además, incorpora nuevos temas en la gramática del español. Vale la pena que consideremos por separado estos cuatro rasgos.
