Mavka | Navka 🌿 Painter: Iren Horrors. Author's description: Mavka is a character from Slavic mythology. In Ukrainian and Polish folklore they are forest spirits living in Carpathian forests, ponds, caves and mountain pastures, usually described as “open”, that is, with a hole in their back. The etymology of the word "Mavka" most likely comes from the word "Nav" - the personification of death in Slavic mythology, but there are other interpretations. Macaws have very small feet, the footprints of which can be mistaken for a child's. They are sometimes considered to be the size of a cat, which clearly refers to another, folk etymology of their name, associated with the sounds that cats make. Creatures similar to Mavkas are found among almost all Slavic peoples, but it was the beliefs about Mavkas that initially occupied a fairly small territory (the Carpathians). Since the image of mawkas developed over a long period of time, at least two types can be distinguished. On the one hand, these are dangerous creatures that are included in the system of popular beliefs as dead unbaptized children or young girls who died because of unhappy love, destructive and dangerous (comparable to mermaids), on the other hand, they are peculiar spirits of mountain forests, the appearance of which was associated with the awakening of nature from hibernation, an omen of a good harvest (comparable rather to the ancient Greek nymphs and South Slavic vilams)

Cossack Timofey Yashchik was one of the bodyguards of the last Russian emperor, "This is not a position, but a matter of honor," he wrote. "In 1916, I went on a business trip with Empress Maria F. to the city of Kiev. We lived there from May 1, 1916, to March 23, 1917, until the cursed revolution. On February 27, it became known that disorders had started in Petrograd, and on March 2, it was already known that the Sovereign had abdicated the throne... This was the most painful thing for me. Upon learning this, I became ill, the servants laughed at me, but I remained silent" (Yashchik, 1920). After the revolution, he went to Denmark as the bodyguard of the Tsar's mother Maria Feodorovna. The loyal Cossack never left the empress's side until her death in 1928. When she died, he stood guard at her coffin for three days without leaving. He opened a grocery store in the suburbs of Copenhagen and passed away in 1946.
