i realized i don't talk much about what i actually do at brown. this is an attempt to fix that. if you have any questions, do text me at @kjaripov -- i'm happy to talk (time permitting). here goes nothing !!
i study computer science at brown. i'm also applying to the concurrent masters program. if i get in, that means i will graduate with both a bachelors and masters degrees. for anyone wondering what a full upper-level cs workload looks like trying to do get this done, this semester i'm doing:
computer science-related (these are required for my degree)
- logic for systems: a course on modeling software systems using software on top of first order logic. check out a greedy coloring algorithm a friend and I modeled as a midsemester project.
- prescriptive analytics: a graduate-level course in large-scale optimization problems. applications include truck routing for big delivery companies and more. as a first project in the course, we wrote a boolean satisfiability (SAT) solver, a report for which i also published here.
- applied cryptography: using advanced cryptography concepts to create secure systems: e.g. messengers, authentications systems and more. our latest project is to implement a secure e-voting platform using zero-knowledge proofs.
masters-program related (these are required classes outside of cs)
- ancient egyptian hieroglyphics II: this is the second semester of a year-long sequence of learning ancient egyptian hieroglyphics. just two weeks ago, i traveled to the museum of fine arts in boston and presented this false door as a tour-guide, reading the inscriptions with grammatical analysis :)
- face of earth: affectionately known at brown as "rocks for jocks", this is a relatively easy class which i don't really attend but have to do assignments + midterms for to fit within the 36-credit requirement for the concurrent masters.
other
- research: working with the programming languages lab at northeastern to help train large language models (think chatgpt) for generating code.
- teaching assistant: roughly 10 hours a week as a TA for our introductory systems programming course (find me here hehe). next semester, i will be the head TA for formal proof and verification -- a class I loved and have written a cool final project for.
this schedule means that, roughly, i am either eating food, hanging out with friends, working, or all of those combined -- all my waking hours, weekends included. there is so much stress and anxiety, always. but it is incredibly rewarding. i am obsessed with everything i do. burnout is real and it is a price i pay for knowing my limits, of which there are many. i am human and failure is an option.
time is the substance i am made of. time is a river which sweeps me along, but i am the river; it is a tiger which destroys me, but i am the tiger; it is a fire which consumes me, but i am the fire. the world, unfortunately, is real; i, unfortunately, am Borges. -- Jorge Luis Borges, Labyrinths: Selected Stories & Other Writings
| 2 | for many years this was my home in tashkent.
i lived here and went to lider bolalar maktabi from 2008 to 2015. i sat on top of the iron rainbow and snacked on kirieshki croutons that we bought for two hundred soum. the broken pool from the 1950s was our favorite spot to play football and shark-in-the-“water”. our apartment entryway smelled like cat piss and our fourth floor neighbor was an alcoholic. i was the happiest child in the world.
as i would fall asleep, i’d look out and see apartments. the little windows etched into soviet concrete buildings would slowly shut off their lights until it was all dark. i never thought i’d miss the blocs, but i do. the ocean of matiz-nexia-lacetti-zhiguli on my way to school. the semolina porridge every morning. the math teacher throwing a wet mop for answering a question wrong.
my memories are the roots that ground me and the stories i carry forward. a longing not just for a place or a time, but for the feeling of being utterly, irrevocably home. | 1 249 |
| 3 | yet another absolutely amazing semester opening with the dream hackathon team. we won the best hardware hack 🌼
check out our project at https://devpost.com/software/spacestock :)
though Ishika couldn’t make it this time and was greatly missed, she was also slaying at MIT’s quantum hackathon with a first place win in her track.
P.S. excuse my appearance - i got 3 hours of sleep in that pic | 1 359 |
| 4 | p.s.: if you enjoy the content on my channel and have telegram premium, feel free to boost it. this would give me the ability to post stories -- maybe this could be another cool medium to document my life at brown. | 959 |
| 5 | it’s so easy to fixate on numbers, course codes, hours spent on work — on countable things that bring our life a sense of meaning. we want the highest numbers, the best numbers. society reveres numbers and we revere them too.
surrounded by the ceaseless rat race of college, my life whispers a different kind of progress – one of inner peace and contentment. i can't wait to wrap up this semester and spend the winter with my mom, dad, my brothers. i miss them lots.
good luck to u all too! | 2 852 |

| 12 | work hard play hard? more like work hard play once or twice maybe if i don’t have a problem set, three projects due tomorrow and oh well fuck it lets go to boston, a party or two, wait i have a midterm tomorrow?!
life has been both hectic and fun. sometimes the story and the events are not that cohesive and that’s okay. i hope that i find a balance of work and play that makes me happiest!

| 14 | october has been so so nice. as the leaves are browning it’s starting to feel like a gorgeous autumn on an ivy league campus — truly the american college experience. quarter zips and preppy fits are on lol
and so many people are visiting! friends from other unis, friends’ families from other countries and soon my aunt and grandparents too.
every day i feel so fortunate to have all the people i do in my life. you have people too! reach out, cherish, accept, enjoy. that’s the new mantra :) | 2 215 |
