The Immersed Boundary Method (IBM): Handling Complex Geometries in CFD IBM is a powerful technique for handling complex geometries on non-conformal grids. Originally developed to simulate blood flow through heart valves, it enforces no-slip boundary conditions by applying a force field spread from a Lagrangian mesh superimposed onto the computational domain. Designed for Cartesian grids, IBM does not require a watertight mesh, integrates well with the Lattice Boltzmann Method (LBM) and can be further enhanced with advanced formulations and wall models. @comsol_shs

🔬 Laminar vs. Turbulent Flow Over an Obstacle When fluid flows over an obstacle inside a channel, the characteristics of the flow vary significantly depending on whether it is laminar or turbulent. Some key observations: 📌 Recirculation & Flow Separation: ➡️ In turbulent flow, the recirculation zone is longer and more intense due to stronger vortices, which can be recognized from the stream lines video 🎬 ➡️ The recirculation zones at the corners of the obstacle are more pronounced in turbulent flow than in laminar flow. 🔁 ➡️ Flow separation occurs later in turbulent flow compared to laminar flow, as higher momentum transfer between fluid particles delays detachment. 🌊 ➡️The difference in the viscous sublayer between laminar & turbulent flow is evident, as it appears much thinner in turbulent flow, causing velocity to rise more sharply near the wall & follow a steeper gradient. Understanding these differences is crucial in CFD analysis, aerodynamics, and fluid mechanics applications. @comsol_shs
