Since the upgradation of relations in 1992, defence and agriculture formed the two main pillars of the bilateral engagement between both nations. In recent years, relations have seen rapid growth across a broad spectrum of areas and the future vision of cooperation, also bilateral trade has diversified into several sectors such as pharmaceuticals, agriculture, IT and telecom, and homeland security.

DRDO successfully test-fires Surface to Air Missile jointly developed with Israel Giving a major fillip to Indian Defence Forces, Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) successfully conducted two flight tests of the Medium Range Surface to Air Missile (MRSAM) at Integrated Test Range, Chandipur off the coast of Odisha. The Indian Army version of MRSAM was carried out as part of the live firing trials against high-speed aerial targets. Both the missiles intercepted the aerial targets and destroyed them completely, registering direct hits at both the ranges. The first launch was aimed at intercepting a medium-altitude long-range target and the second launch was for proving the capability of a low altitude short-range target. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh lauded the efforts of DRDO, the Indian Army, and the Industry for the successful flight tests of MRSAM-Army. Both the successful tests established the capability of the weapon system in intercepting targets at critical ranges, the Union Minister said. Decoding MRSAM The Medium Range Surface to Air Missile (MRSAM) has been developed jointly by DRDO and Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI), Israel, to serve in the Indian Army. The Surface-to-Air Missile weapon system comprises a mobile launcher system, multi-function radar, and other vehicles. It is noteworthy that the flight tests were carried out with the weapon system in deliverable configuration and the performance of the weapon system was validated through the flight data captured by range instruments like radars, electro-optical tracking systems and telemetry deployed by ITR, Chandipur. The Successful Maiden Launch of MRSAM In December 2020, Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) achieved a major milestone with the maiden launch of Medium Range Surface to Air Missile (MRSAM) – Indian Army version from Integrated Test Range, Chandipur, off the coast of Odisha. The missile completely destroyed a high-speed unmanned aerial target which was mimicking an aircraft with a direct hit. A number of range instruments such as Radar, Telemetry, and Electro-Optical Tracking systems were deployed and captured the complete mission data, validating the weapon system performance including the destruction of the target. India-Israel Defence Relations India & Israel share imperative Defence relations which involve imports critical defence technologies from Israel. Both the country also holds regular exchanges between their Armed forces. Additionally, there has been cooperation on security issues, including a ‘Joint Working Group on Counter-Terrorism’. In February 2014, India and Israel signed three important agreements on Mutual Legal Assistance in Criminal Matters, Cooperation in Homeland Security, and Protection of Classified Material. Notably, there is a Joint Steering Committee under the agreement on Homeland Security, aided by thematic Joint Working Groups. Since 2015, IPS officer trainees have been visiting the Israel National Police Academy every year for a one-week long foreign exposure training at the end of their training in the National Police Academy, Hyderabad. About India-Israel Industrial R&D and Technological Innovation Fund India-Israel Industrial R&D and Technological Innovation Fund (I4F) fund is a collaboration between the Department of Science and Technology (DST), and the Israel Innovation Authority, to promote, facilitate and support joint industrial R&D projects between companies from India and Israel to address the challenges in the agreed ‘Focus Sectors’. The goal of I4F is to promote, facilitate and support joint industrial R&D, which would lead to the co-development and commercialization of innovative technologies that can benefit both nations. The Global Innovation & Technology Alliance (GITA) is appointed to implement the I4F program in India, while Israel Innovation Authority is the implementing agency in Israel.
