🤰 FDA Pregnancy Drug Categories (A, B, C, D, X)
A ✅ — Safest. Controlled studies in pregnant women show no risk to the fetus. Very few drugs fall here.
B 🟢 — Animal studies show no fetal risk, but no controlled human studies exist (or animal studies showed risk not confirmed in humans). Many common drugs (e.g., acetaminophen) are here.
C 🟡 — Animal studies show adverse fetal effects, but no controlled human studies exist (or no studies at all). Use only if potential benefit to the mother outweighs potential risk to the fetus. Many drugs land here due to lack of human data.
D 🟠 — Positive evidence of human fetal risk. May be used in serious or life-threatening conditions when no safer drug is available.
X 🔴 — Most dangerous. Fetal abnormalities shown in studies; risk clearly outweighs any benefit. Contraindicated in pregnancy.
⚠️ Always consult your doctor before taking any medication during pregnancy.
