The Overlooked Commandment: Dutifulness to Parents In Islām, after worshiping Allāh alone, one of the greatest deeds is being dutiful to our parents. Caring for our parents isn’t just an act of kindness; it’s a form of worship that can lead directly to the pleasure of Allāh. The Prophet ﷺ said: "The pleasure of the Lord is in the pleasure of the parent, and the displeasure of the Lord is in the displeasure of the parent." Sunan Tirmidhī Sometimes, in our zeal to pursue acts of worship that are grand—seeking knowledge, activism, building organisations for Da'wah, fasting, or public charity—we overlook one of the simplest and most profound forms of worship: serving and honoring our parents. How often do we pause to realise that caring for our parents when they are in need is like a door to Jannah wide open before us? So let us not neglect this command in the pursuit of other deeds especially when they are in need. Helping our parents is not only a duty; it’s a way to bring Allāh’s mercy into our own lives. Their Love For Us is A Sign of Allāh’s Mercy in This World. Action Plan: Dear brothers and sisters, ❖ If your parents call upon you, respond to them with urgency. ❖ If they are in need, let nothing hold you back from supporting them. ❖ If they are old and frail, serve them with tenderness, as they once served you in your helplessness. ❖ If they are no longer with you, honor their memory with prayers, charity, and the fulfillment of their wishes. Friday Reminder: The Torch of Sacrifice is Yours, O Ummah—Carry It Forward With Strength! Our entire existence is for the sake of Allāh, the One who created us, sustains us, and surrounds us with endless blessings. Yet, how often do we reflect on the immense purpose for which we were created? Allāh did not place us on this earth to chase comforts, to idle in ease, or to be distracted by fleeting worldly desires. He brought us here for a noble mission: to worship Him, to establish and serve His religion, and to strive for His pleasure with every ounce of our being. "Say, “Surely my prayer, my sacrifice, my life, and my death are all for Allāh—Lord of all worlds." Sūrah An'ām: 162 When we think of the Sahābah [may Allāh be pleased with them all], we cannot help but be amazed by their lives. They were men and women of unparalleled sacrifice. They left their homes, their families, their wealth, and even their lives in the dust for the sake of Allāh and His Messenger ﷺ. They walked the burning deserts, faced arrows and swords without fear, and endured hunger and hardship beyond what we can imagine—all for the love of Allāh and service to His Dīn. Let us not grow complacent in our comfortable homes while the Ummah cries for help. Let us not be content with empty words while the call to support Allāh’s Dīn grows louder each day. This life is fleeting, but the Hereafter is forever. Let us remember that every moment of sacrifice, every effort we make for Allāh, is a step closer to earning His eternal pleasure. Our graves are calling us, what have we prepared for it? So rise, O servant of Allāh! Strive like the Sahābah strove, give like they gave, sacrifice like they sacrificed and love Allāh as they loved Him. The road may not be easy, but the reward is eternal. The Wind: A Sign of Allāh’s Mercy and Might As we experience strong winds in the UK let us take a moment and reflect on it from an Islamic perspective. Wind is one of Allāh’s great signs, demonstrating His power, wisdom, and mercy. It can be a source of blessings, as it spreads rain-bearing clouds, fertilizes the earth, and sustains life. Allāh says, "And it is He who sends the winds as good tidings before His mercy until, when they have carried heavy rainclouds, We drive them to a dead land and We send down rain therein and bring forth thereby [some] of all the fruits." Sūrah A'rāf: 57. It is also mentioned in the Sunnah: The Messenger of Allāh ﷺ say: "The wind comes from Allāh's mercy." Sunan Abū Dawūd [no. 5097] Wind as a punishment: Wind can also serve as a means of punishment, as seen in the stories of past nations like the people of 'Ād, who were destroyed by a violent, unrelenting wind due to their rejection of the Messenger Hūd [Alayhis Salām]. Allāh says, "…a wind, within it a painful punishment, Destroying everything by command of its Lord. And they became so that nothing was seen [of them] except their dwellings. Thus, do We recompense the criminal people." Sūrah Ahqāf: 24-25. Imām Ibn al-Qayyim described the greatness of Allāh: "He is controlling the affairs of all the kingdoms. He commands and prohibits, creates and gives provision, and gives death and gives life...His command and decree are carried out throughout the heavens and on earth, above it and below it, in the oceans and in the air." See Wābil al-Sayyib [p. 125]. The Gift of Their Presence is Temporary: Show Them Love & Honour Before It’s Gone Our parents are a gift from Allāh, and their love and sacrifices are beyond measure. The Qur'ān commands us to honour them, especially in their old age, and to treat them with the utmost respect, love and kindness. Allāh says: "And We have enjoined on man [to be dutiful and good] to his parents. His mother bore him in weakness and hardship upon weakness and hardship, and his weaning is in two years, give thanks to Me and to your parents, unto Me is the final destination." Sūrah Luqmān: 14 Never forget them: ❖ A mother's love begins long before we are born—she carries us in her heart and in her womb, enduring every hardship with grace, all for the child she has yet to meet. ❖ A father's love is a quiet strength that shapes our lives, guiding us with wisdom, protecting us with unwavering support, and inspiring us with sacrifices we may never fully understand or see. Action plan to start TODAY: ❖ Spend quality time with them. Make time in your day to be with your parents, whether it's through conversation, helping with daily tasks, or simply being present. ❖ Never harm them with your words, actions or silence. ❖ Speak to them with kindness. Always address your parents with respect, patience, and love. ❖ Always pray for them. Regularly make Du'a' for your parents, asking Allāh to grant them good health, happiness, and ease. "A parents love is like a shield that protects us from life's storms, offering warmth, strength, and refuge when the world feels cold and uncertain." Legacy of the Unnamed: The Inner Sincerity of a Devoted Mujāhid Sincerity is essential in worship, as only actions done solely for Allāh are rewarded and bring us closer to Him. Jihād is a great deed in Islām and is one of the fields during which showing off [Riyā'] can take place, because not everyone who fights is sincere. Our Salaf used to hide themselves in Jihād because they recognized the importance of sincerity in it. In one battle, the Muslim army surrounded one of the fortresses of the enemy, and the enemy army started showering the Muslims with arrows and things became difficult for the Muslim army. Suddenly, one of the Muslims got up and dug a tunnel and was able to enter through it to the enemy fortress. He killed the man guarding the gate of the fortress and opened the gate for the Muslims to enter. The Muslims entered the fortress and won the battle, but they did not know who the man was [who dug the tunnel]. Maslamah [may Allāh have mercy upon him] who was the leader of the Muslim army, wanted to know who the man was so that he could reward him. He was unable to discover his identity, so he made an announcement, adjuring this man in the Name of Allāh to come to him. The man went to him at night and placed a condition on the leader that he would not look for him after that. Maslamah agreed to the condition, and so the man uncovered his face and allowed him to recognize him. Maslamah always used to say after that: "O Allāh, join me with the man of the tunnel in the Hereafter." Revivers of the Future: How the Prophet ﷺ Inspired the Youth to Lead Today, we often fail to recognise the vast potential of our youth. Instead of investing in their growth, guiding them, and empowering them as the Prophet ﷺ did, we tend to judge them by their current level of knowledge or understanding. Yet, true leadership lies in helping them develop their strengths, deepen their faith, and find their place in building the future. The Prophet ﷺ saw the promise in the youth and uplifted them, reminding us of the power of encouragement, guidance, and trust in raising generations of strong, faithful leaders. One beautiful example is Usāma ibn Zayd, whom the Prophet ﷺ appointed to lead an army at just 17 years old, a testament to the deep trust he placed in him. Similarly, Alī ibn Abī Tālib was only a teenager when he risked his life by sleeping in the Prophet's bed during the Hijrah to protect him from harm. See Al-Bidāyah wa Nihāyah. Action Plan: ❖ Show love and respect. Approach the youth with kindness, honour, and respect. ❖ ⁠Engage and connect. Take time to truly engage with them, listen to their ideas, and help them meet their needs and goals. ❖ ⁠Involve them actively. Create meaningful projects and initiatives where they can contribute. ❖ ⁠Most importantly withhold judgment, offer advice and guidance. Remember, everyone is on their unique journey. The Deep Connection: Worship with The Heart, Body, and Mind Imām Ibn al-Qayyim mentioned: "The actions of the heart are the foundation [of belief], and the actions of the limbs follow and complete them. Intention is like the soul, and actions like the body: if the soul leaves the body, the body dies. Therefore, knowledge of the affairs of the heart is more important than knowledge of the affairs of the limbs… How else is a hypocrite distinguished from a believer except by deeds of the heart?" See Badā’i’ al-Fawā’id [pp.224 & 330] Relections: ❖ True worship occurs when the heart, mind, and actions are in harmony, leading to spiritual growth. ❖ The connection between the heart and physical acts of worship is crucial to find tranquility. ❖ Intention and sincerity [Ikhlās] make acts meaningful, and this focus enhances inner peace and strengthens our bond with Allāh. Temporary Pleasures vs True Happiness Imām Ibn al-Qayyim said: ‎“O people who take pleasure in a life that will vanish, falling in love with a faded shadow is sheer stupidity!” Purification of the Soul [Pg. 147]. Reflection: ❖ In Islām, the concepts of pleasure and happiness are distinctly different, yet interconnected. ❖ Pleasure often refers to temporary sensory experiences that may bring immediate gratification, such as indulgence in food, entertainment, or material possessions. ❖ Happiness in Islām is deeper and more profound, rooted in spiritual fulfillment and the contentment that comes from a relationship with Allāh. ❖ True happiness is achieved through worship and obedience to Allāh, as it aligns with the soul’s purpose and leads to inner peace.
